Sounds like 'clipping' to me

I'm at a loss, since I don't see why your receiver would start 'clipping' (cutting out the sound) like that. The specs seems to match up fine, at least on paper.

At what volume levels is this happening- 70-80%+ full volume (etc.)? How long does it take approximately before it 'clips' (=cuts out)(?)

Impedence mismatch

"Onkyo TX-SR307 specifications are
Speaker Impedance 6-16

specifications of pure acoustics supernova-5 speaker set are :
OHMS, Nominal/Minimum: 8/4 Ohms"

The receiver is trying to protect itself by shutting down the output to your speakers, which are being driven to a lower impedence at high volume. Six ohms is the minimum your receiver can handle, but the minimum rating of the speakers is four ohms. You should be very careful not to destroy your receiver.

Lower the volume in the meantime and consider new speakers

To avoid damaging your receiver in the future you should find speakers that share the lowest impedance rating of your receiver, which is 6 ohms. You could also look at the audioholics site I've cited below for more info on connecting 4 ohm speakers to and 8 ohm receiver. The problem with simply switching one of the higher end receivers to 4 ohm setting is that now you have less margin for error.
