Home Theater System That Works With Current Blu-ray Player

Jun 30, 2009 2:43AM PDT

We have a Samsung PN50A550 1080p plasma TV and a Magnavox NB500MG9 Blu-ray player. We want to purchase a home theater sound system that will work with both. We purchased a Samsung HT-WS1G Crystal Surround Air Track yesterday and set it up. In order to hear dialog when playing a Blu-ray or DVD, the sound level must be maxed out, at which point the rest of the sound track will drive you out of the room. We're returning it to the store and I'd like some input on what we should be looking for.

Thanks in advance.

What's your budget? There are too many options to consider w/o knowing a figure first.

The problem is, you have to generally spend a little more before you start to get at HTIB systems that can handle the advanced lossless audio codecs provided by your blu ray player/discs. I generally recommend the Onkyo HTIB packages, as they often give you nearly as much value as their receivers do for not a terribly higher price. IMHO you do miss out on a lot with blu ray content y not opting for a receiver that can handle the advanced audio capabilities. Something like these would work, but would be closer to $700-

If you wanted to stick with basic surround and within your budget-

Just note that with the $500 or less HTIB sets, you won't likely find anything that can decode the DTS-HD and TrueHD sound formats that come on most Blu-rays...so you will be limited to regular DTS and DolbyD sound for Blu-rays.
