Home Theater System Design Help

by Alex_klh / January 6, 2014 2:48 AM PST

We are somewhat new to the home theater system design and setup, so I wanted to solicit some help. Based on the outstanding review by CNET, we are purchasing a Sony STR-DN840 for our home theater av receiver. I need help with the speaker selections. I want to put the surround speakers in the ceiling. I am looking for recommendations for in-celing speakers and front speaker. I would like to keep the price moderate but still have good sound quality.
I did look at the HTD in-ceiling speakers online but do not know anything about them.

Answer
I suggest avoiding ceiling speakers altogether
by Pepe7 / January 6, 2014 5:05 AM PST

If you are at all concerned about sound quality/proper surround sound that actually works well, you will re-consider the aesthetics of the room and swap that plan for a more standard speaker layout.

I suggest using the straight forward examples at the Dolby site as a reference point for your HT space. The front & center speakers should be directed toward the listener, since that's how your ears are situated on your head Wink The sound tends to be extremely muddy when coming from above in all directions.

Watch the embedded videos to see the illustrations. This will show you how the sound needs to be directed in order to achieve the desired effect Wink

HT Ceiling Speakers
by Alex_klh / January 6, 2014 7:51 AM PST

Thanks for your input Pepe7. I looked at the DOLBY website but did not see where they addressed anything about ceiling speakers. We are not completely sold on the idea of ceiling speakers. This came from some initial input I got from a person in the Magnolia Shop. They suggested the ceiling speakers with directional tweeters might be a good option since we have a vaulted ceiling in the area we would be setting up the HT.
