Home theater options for Dolby Atmos

Sep 8, 2016 4:48AM PDT

I'm building a house and the new house will have an authentic man cave in the form of a basement. Since it's a new construction I can set it up just about however I want. The only catch is that since the man cave is at the bottom of my wife's list, and the house project isn't cheap, I won't have a lot of financial resources to invest in it from the beginning. The walls will be cement, as well as the floor and the roof but I plan on finishing one wall with sheet rock as well as a false roof just so I can go ahead and set up all my TV and audio system from the beginning a day put it to use. I may end up going ahead with all the sheet rock walls but I'm not sure for now...it will depend on the cost and how everything goes.

The room in general is a 60 meter squared rectangle, but I will set up in one side the home theater system and on the other side maybe a football table or a table for eating, as there will be a fire place in one corner. My idea is to set up a projector and put in a home theater system for movies and sports. Listening to music is not a priority. The layout of the room will be that when you are in the theater "square" of the room looking at the screen, the open part of the room will be at your right (with a table or an open area, and the entrance to the room is behind you and enters into the center of this 60 square meters rectangular room.

So...my question is what is the best thing I could set up for the media part of the room? My biggest doubt is for the home theater. I have never had a bose system although I've seen them in the stores and had some family that has had them and I really like them, although there seems to be a huge negative trend online in regards to bose. The only problem I find with bose is that I don't think it will work with dolby atmos and I think I'd like to set up a dolby atmos system, since I've got the perfect opportunity.

My idea is to setup a 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 system. I don't think I like the idea of side speakers because this room will also be used by my 4 year old son and I don't want to have a lot of things in the floor, especially in the middle of the room. My idea for the atmos part is to use in ceiling speakers but I don't know which ones to use, and if they would be compatible with a bose acoustimass system. I like the idea of bose acoustimass because then I can buy a denon or onkyo reciever with the maximum watts for the bose speakers to bring them to life as well as have the wifi and Bluetooth funcions in the reciever. Apart from that....there are some offers here in Spain for the acoustimass 10 series v bose acoustimass with the denon x3200w for around 1600€. This price is a bit pricey, but maybe I could do it...although I'd prefer to have atmos with this and I don't think it's possible, although nobody has told me one way or the other.

Any advice for setup options? Please, no bose bashing...if you don't like bose then recommend other options but this is to hear all my options and not whether or not bose is just marketing or not! Thank you!

The cement often gives no internet via WiFi.

Since a lot of content is streamed today, your design should include at least one Ethernet run from where your router will be to this concrete shielded room.

Good point

Definitely. I'm planning on running ethernet throughout the house so that all rooms will be able to have access points at some time or another just in case. Especially to the basement because there's no way any wifi will reach there.

And from the horse of course.

The question
Sep 9, 2016 4:49AM PDT

My real question is if a bose acoustimass system would be, in any way, compatible with a dolby atmos setup (roof speakers). Since all the speaker wires go through the base speaker in some way I don't know if there is any configuration of how to set it up, since I don't really know how the setup works with bose and a denon reciever (for example) in general.

No! Bose is not the correct choice

Bose is not intended to be used with ATMOS. Completely eliminate Bose since it's overpriced in any case and under-performing.

Pop over to AVSforums to read more there about what you should expect. They have some entry level ATMOS systems specked out in one of the speaker sub-forums.

Look, you have a non starter in the speakers since I can't find where the Bose does the upfiring. I don't enter into Bose WWE contests either.

So while I can't hear the difference (I tried many times at trade shows), audio is an area where if you think it's better I won't disagree.
