your tv will not pass 5.1 audio from its optical out. you should at least get stereo sound but there is no point to connect your receiver to your tv's optical out if you have a dvr. the audio optical out on the tv is designed to output audio coming from ota channels. most OTA-HD channels will have 5.1 programming and then you would get 5.1 audio to your reciever, but hdmi-optical on your tv will not pass the same audio. just leave the optical from the dvr plugged straight into your receiver. its the only way to get your 5.1 sound to your receiver if there is no hdmi input.
Hi, I have a Dish Network VIP622 DVR, a Sharp Aquos LC42D64U TV, and a Onkyo Dolby Digital 5.1 receiver. I connected the DVR to the TV using an HDMI cable. I then connected a Digital Optical Audio from the TV to the receiver (receiver is not HDMI compatible). For some reason, I don't get any sound (I do get video). However, when I move the Digital Optical Audio from the TV and plug it into the DVR and then connect it to the receiver, I do get sound (the receiver is connected to my 5.1 speaker setup). Any idea on why I don't get audio from my initial setup? The HDMI sends audio/video from the DVR to the TV. Will/can the TV take the audio and send it to the receiver (via Digital Optical Audio)? Any comments? Thanks.
