Question

Home Theater Audio Hook-Up

Jul 19, 2016 2:08PM PDT

I have a Sherwood R-945 amp, an LG TV and an Xfinity Box. The Sherwood does not have HDMI connectors. Can I run HDMI from Xfinity box to the LG and audio from the Xfinity box to the Sherwood amp and have a good result? If this is possible, I will turn off LG TV internal speakers and get audio to my amp.

Apppreciate any advice / suggestions, but I need to use the Sherwood R-945 for now due to financial restrictions.

Thanks...

To be exact, the full make/model numbers are needed.

https://www.avforums.com/threads/sherwood-r-945-5-1-receiver.1873167/ tells me it's not worth much to some folk.

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/209-audio-gear/1564177-sherwood-newcastle-r-945-5-1-channel-receiver.html shows it has an optical input so rather than repeat all that has been written about such setups, just connect your stuff to the TV and see what you can get out of the optical.

Remember I have deferred to the thousands of prior posts about TVs and more than stereo output when the input is HDMI and didn't duplicate how some TVs pass nothing if the input is more than stereo.

Tell all and folk may fill in some blanks.

I don't understand your second paragraph where you say, "when the input is HDMI and didn't duplicate how some TVs pass nothing if the input is more than stereo."

As to optical, in the past, I have had issues with optical audio lagging what is seen on the screen.

The audio pass through is well done.

Some TVs don't pass HD, 5.1 or such when the source is HDMI. Can you explain to me what is unclear about this statement?

As to the lagging, that's why folk and most experts agree the better setup is all sources to the receiver then pass the video over HDMI. In your case you are trying to work with what you have so you must try a setup with what you have.

Some folk will not try and they are lost for quite a long time.

Let me be more down about this.

Most TVs don't pass 5.1. It was pretty bad years ago and seems to have gotten worse. Not only is pass through not a sure thing but many models will not downconvert to stereo as a workaround (used to see that more often, now, not finding it.)

So counting on the TV to pass audio is a worse bet than a coin flip.

I think I have enough info to try a few different combos.

Many Thanks

Sorry I forgot a thing.

While there is a rare TV that passe no audio whatsoever when the source was HDMI, it's so rare I won't say it's a problem.

But I forget a setting I found to work around many of the pass through issues even though some hate it.

Set the source device to send stereo PCM or less than 5.1. I've got a few to pass through that way.
