home server set up

by zacho / January 1, 2005 5:40 AM PST

I want to set up a server at home instead of using my router or in addition to it. Really just an educational exercise for me. Anyone have any good starting points for me? TIA

Its really just for sharing an cable connection not a webserver. I just want an extra firewall and to know the process of how it works. I have win xp, win 2k, win 2k server, redhat 7.3 (never used it) as basis for starting. I havent had much success with redhat although it's mainly from laziness and lack of effort. Nice link though.

serving???? To what clients???

I am in no way an expert, just started reading the Cisco series of First step books. Seems that with the firewall in the router, DHCP, and NAT, XP's fiewall, and an additional compatible firewall in the Op Sys, there may not be much left to worry about. But then, I may be naive. That is, unless you visit many of those sites that are known as sources for hackers to use.
