Home Server Newbie

May 15, 2005 12:41PM PDT

I have a home network that is nothing out of the ordinary. Cable internet routed, wi-fi, shared files...all the usual. I have had friends who have had servers in their homes. Basically it was a computer that they set up in a closet somewhere without a monitor. I would like to know what the purpose of this would be in a home and what the benefits are. I know that it is used basically for network file storage, but is their really anything else? I am about to network a new house and would like to put in a server if it will benefit me. Please help me if you are knowledgable. Thanks!

you probably don't need it.

A person setting up a server in their home, usually because:

need a 'server'
have a spare computer
able to set it up

The server can be use for:
File storage
Gateway/Firewall/Sharing the Internet
Intranet/Homepage
etc.

Since I'm not that knowledgeable, that's all I can informed you about a server.
