Home networking troubles

Dec 2, 2003 2:27AM PST

I HAD a 2 computer network setup for about a year now in the same setup: The two PC's share a 10 port HUB with my DSL through the uplink. Both computers could use the internet simultaneously but could not connect to each other unless the internet connection was disabled. Fine and dandy, it worked out quite well.
NOW for some reason, with the same setup I cannot get the 2 computers to connect like they used to.
With the two PC's connected to the HUB without an internet connection- PC 1 can see PC 2 but it cannot gain access and PC2 cannot see PC1 when viewing the workgroup computers. Also, PC1 cannot connect to the internet (while PC2 can) through the hub, but it can if I connect the DSL modem directly to it.
I'm running out of ideas- I have run Windows Network setup wizard numerous times, Firewalls are always disabled of course, uninstalled/reinstalled ethernet cards, different patch cables, different ports, my last resort might just be to reformatt... but if anybody has any suggestions that would be appreciated!

System restore or get a router and not only share the internet connection, but connect to each other at the same time

DANGEROUS and illegal configuration.

If you put a Linksys/DLink/Other NAT capable internet sharing box in there, it just might work.

Otherwise, you will find support to be non-existant. Yes, it may have worked before, but you are very alone on this configuration.

Dangerous and illegal? And why is that so??

Dangerous because you can easily expose shares to the internet. Not so nice people will alter your files or just delete them. Hence, an illegal configuration.

You won't find much if any support for this setup.
