Question

home networking mixed bag

Feb 15, 2015 4:26AM PST

i have a home network that has become cluttered. looking for some advice. The existing setup is as follows:

ISP modem: SMC D3GN (bridge mode)
supplied by shaw in canada. This device runs to our existing stuff:

a linksys WRT54G2V1 (wireless G router)
no sure how its config'd.

a Dlink dir 655 as an access point

We also have an airport express base station (older)(model #A1264) this is wired to the link sys router at this time.

this seems like a rats nest. how do i clean it up a bit? I've just ran cat 6 throughout our entire home. I've got apple tv (running wirelessly) and an all in one wired to the link sys. any help would be greatly appreciated. this could be way cleaner IMO

Clarification Request
Can't guess why 3 routers or WAPs.

Just last week I updated our home router because the router from 2010 was starting to lock up. Did the usual so it was time. I used this article for inspiration.
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-wi-fi-router/

So a few reviews later I have a new router then the usual update the firmware and it's so much better. For me the TP-LINK Archer C7 plus your airport may be all that's needed.

The signal on the SMC was weak so we added the linksys and apple products that all of our devices were registered with previously, this was shaw's tech solution. The dir 655 was added as a Access point later on by myself just to experiment. I would like to eliminate the SMC , and linksys altogether, but have been told I have to keep my ISP's hardware in place, seems strange. I will post to shaw's online forums as well. Thanks for the new router suggestion

It's not configured as a router so I can supply my own. Multiple routers is a PIT_. I used to configure such things but stopped as folk would reset a router to defaults and bring the network down for good.
