Question

Home Networking

Jun 11, 2018 4:27PM PDT

Hi All,

I live in a housing complex that provides a WiFi connection and/or a single ethernet line. I want to create home network for gaming, file sharing, my home security cameras, etc, but am unable to do so. Also, I'm not a complete networking beginner.

However, I can't simply connect a router to either the WiFi or the ethernet. The ISP requires certificate authentication for each device on WiFi (and no devices see each other). In order to connect the single ethernet line, you have to provide the MAC ID of the single device. Routers are not able to be connected. I can't find a way to login with them.

Another option I considered was a virtual WiFi router from Windows 10. So, I connected my PC to the ethernet, created a virtual router and thought I'd be in business. However, something is set up to recognize when you use a virtual router or share your internet connection. When this happens, the internet connection is killed.

This is driving me nuts. I know there may be additional details needed, but I'm hoping maybe ya'll can help me through this.

Thank you so much in advance.

They have their own system. I have to ask you to ask them how to solve this. It can't be an unique request.

It is a unique request. Yes, they obviously have their own system, but they provide what they provide and no more. Any request is met with, "We have systems in place to ensure the security of the network."

However, because I'm able to login with certificate to obtain internet access, there has to be a straightforward way to create a home network without sharing that information with the landlord / ISP.

Not an unique request as many others would need to have say a NAS and share it among their PCs and such.

If they maintain it's for security then our forum policies forbid breaking that agreement.

However Windows 10, Linux should be able to create your own network with a Virtual Router. If they shut down access when you do this, then you are back to them to ask for a fix. I can not override your agreement with them.
