Home Networking

May 13, 2005 9:36AM PDT

Hi Guys,

I have a WinXP Pro Desktop and a WinXP Home Laptop.
I have a D-Link Broadband Router which is plugged in to the DSL Modem for the Internet.
And each of the PCs are plugged in to the Router.

I am able to access the Internet from both PCs without any problems.

The problem is when I wanted to share files between them.

I ran the Netowrk Wizard on the XPPro machine and created a HOME Workgroup.
Then I ran the same thing again on the XPHome machine and pointed it to the same domain. (Home)

Both machines have different names, they both point to the same workgroup, and I can ping each from the other.

I can access the shared files and folders on the XPHome from the XPPro, but not Vice-Versa.

On the XPHome, the only way to see the XPPro is to go to My Network Places -> Entire Netwrok -> Home(workgroup name) -> XPPro(PC1) and XPHome(PC2).
But when I click on XPPro I get the error message :

\\XPPro is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I checked the shared files on the XPPro and made sure that the sharing and permissions were for everyone as opposed to the default Admin/Local.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kunal

This non-connectivity often...

happens when there is a firewall blocking LAN access. Check for XPs as well as any others.

Done that....

Hi,

I have checked the XP Windows firewall settings.

I made sure that under the Firewall Settings -> Exceptions, File and Print Sharing is Checked.

Is there anything else I can do ? Should I disable the firewall on the XPPro Box ?
Cause I checked the XPHome box and its Firewall settings are the same with the File and print sharing enabled.

Thanks.

Checked Firewall Exceptions
May 13, 2005 3:17PM PDT

Hi

As mentioned in the previous post, I checked the firewall exceptions and made sure File and Print sharing was enabled.

I also shut the firewall down and restarted both PCs and then tried to connect.

Same problem as before, XP Pro can access XP Home but not Vice-Versa.

What else can I check ?

Having exactly the same problem; both computer using XP Home
May 31, 2005 5:01AM PDT

I am having exactly the same problem. Have removed all firewalls, Norton and have set Computer A to clean boot. A can see B, B cannot see the files on A. Receive error message:Error Message: "\\Sony is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission."

Have been working with MS for about a month and they, at this time, have not be able to find solution.

I had exactly the same problem
Jun 1, 2005 9:21PM PDT

Resolution: Change the registry value in the following Key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
DWORD KEY "restrictanonymous" = 0

I have been trying to solve the same problem for 6 weeks, yesterday I talked to a MS technician who did a little research and asked me to try the above. It worked, the value on my "A" computer was 1, after I made the change computer "B" had full access to "A". If you did additional information drop me a line.
