Home network woes

Mar 15, 2005 9:27AM PST

Here goes.

I have a computer running Windows 98 SE connected to a US Robotics wireless router. I also have a laptop running Windows XP Home with a wireless network card. I used the network setup wizard in Windows XP to set up the network.

When I go to the "My Network Places" window in the XP laptop computer, I see the two computers displayed, one called "Inspiron" and one called "Upstairs". When I double click the "Upstairs", I get the following message:

"\\Upstairs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Now, my upstairs Win98 computer is running Norton Personal Firewall. When I try and access it from the laptop, I get this message. I disabled the Norton firewall, and then saw an icon in the bottom right for the "Internet Gateway". However, when I try to access it from the laptop, I still get the same error message, it just takes a bit longer to be displayed.

I don't know what kind of rule my firewall needs to allow my laptop access. And even with the firewall disabled I'm still getting the message, so maybe there are settings that need to be adjusted on my router?

I'm at a real loss as to what to do. If you need any more info just ask.

Thanks

New problem

I installed ZoneAlarm on both computers and allowed each computers IP addresses to be connected to each other. I can connect to my laptop from the 98 machine, but from the laptop I get the same error message as above except the last line says "The semaphore timeout period has expired."

On the 98 machine I also have the icon that says "Internet Gateway - Unconfigured".
