Question

Home Network setup CPE to switch to two routers

Jul 10, 2019 11:35AM PDT

Good day.

I am wanting to setup a new network at home. I have attached a picture of what I am thinking. The internet connection is far from our house because we are in a valley. So I am wanting to use a CPE to send the signal to a switch. Then use two separate routers in the two homes so that both homes have decent signal. I want home 2 to be able to access the Window 10 server in house 1 as well.

Network Image file.

Question:
A. Is this the best way to connect this all up? Should the Windows 10 Server be directly in the switch or is it accessible this way. Means one less Ethernet cable to run like this setup.
B. How do I set this up? What are the IP addresses I need to assign to each router so that they both can access the server?
C.Do I need a managed switch to get this to work?
D. Is there a better setup?

Answer
I don't see anything wrong here.

That looks valid to me. I would however test with a single router centrally located in the home to see if a second router is required. I find that the usual good 802.11ac (24. and 5GHz) router covers two thousand square foot stick and drywall two story homes very nicely.

Windows 10 file sharing

Thank you for your response.

Where we live all the walls are brick and ceilings are reinforced cement. So we get huge signal loss throughout our house. Our neighbor has rthe same building setup so the drop is significant.

My question is how do I share the server? Do I set a static IP on the Windows 10 machine and then from the other router access the server under that IP address?

Your choice on the server.

So, Yes.
