home network question

Jan 26, 2006 11:40AM PST

ok, just want to check and see if this is the correct setup for my home net. any feeback would be great..

cable modem to ethernet switch
ethernet switch port #2 to playstaion #1
ethernet switch port #3 to router
router to xbox360, mac#1 and pc
off this router I have another line to an ethernet switch which connects mac#2 and playstation #2 upstairs.
I have two IP address so that both playstation can go online in the same game.

yeah, I'm thinking about going wireless which will be another can of worms.
thanks!

Hmm, I would go with

Cable modem to router (wan port)

router port #1 to other router

The playstation and xbox to the router

and all the switches to the router

other computer to the switches and/OR to the router.

Remember, that second router, should have DHCP disabled.

Wireless Accesspoint, could be connected to the router (first or second, closer to the wireless device location)

Wireless is the way to go. Try to get all the equipment from one company so if a problem comes up they can't say it is someone else fault. Now for your setup.

Cable modem > router
Router > mac & pc & xbox 360
Router > switch > ps #1
Switch > switch > ps # 2 & mac upstairs

OPTION #2
Cable modem > router
Router > mac & pc
Router > switch > ps #1 & xbox 360
Router or switch > switch > ps # 2 & mac # 2 upstairs

For most switches you cannot run more than 1 switch off of a switch. Say what is located in each room and where the room is located for better setup info. Most routers now able you to set an IP address outside of the firewall for gaming so if you program the playstations and Xbox 360 to use the same IP addresses to connect then set those address outside the firewall, i.e. 198.168.1.201- 198.168.1.202 and 198.168.1.203, you?ll get full connection online.
