Resolved Question

home network issues

Dec 24, 2014 5:00PM PST

Hello,
I am trying to create a home network, so that we can share files between pc's TV and media player. Windows 7 has such a facility built in, it seems, which is a nice surprise, because I thought I was going to need network cards in all pc's.

If I go to Control Panel/Homegroup in Windows 7, I get a message that this pc cannot be connected. If I go to Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center it shows that there IS a Network (Network 6) and that my PC is connected to it. Anyhow this is just a small issue and it seems that I can work around it.

More important, when looking into other computers, I need a user name and password. Password I have, because I wrote that down when first PC's were connected with ethernet cables. But a USERNAME I cannot remember. How can I find the username????

any help here?

Thanks,
Rob

Re: username and password

If you have the same Windows accounts (and passwords?) on all PC's it will work fine. Otherwise try entering the username/password combination you use to logon on the remote machine.

If all Pc's are Windows 7, a homegroup is an easier solution than the classical folder/printer share.

Thanks for your respons. I do not use any username/password to log in to our pc's.
What do you mean with windows account? Our pc's have both windows 7, but I also hope to connect a mediaplayer (mede8er) and our samsung smart tv to the network.

In Windows you need a username to logon. That's the username you click on on the welcome screen. There's even one if you enabled autologon. It't the same as the name of the users folder in Documents and Settings (as XP called it, it's Users in Windows 7). It's also called Windows account, to discriminate it from e-mail account, for example.

username

I have tried all usernames and passwords that might be relevant to the problem. Nothing works. Please help.

What happens is whatever pc or media device I try to enter from whatever machine, I get this Windows Security window with the title Enter Network Password. It asks for a username and password. I DO have that password from when I was setting up the Network, but no bl..... USERNAME. I have tried the windows account names, the names of the pc's. I have also tried those in combination with the passwords from the pc's. No combination works!<div>
On all machines it shows that there IS a network and I CAN see all machines that are switched on, including PC's, TV and mediaplayer.
Please advise.

https://www.google.com/search?q="Enter+network+password"+windows+7 gives a lot of links that have different solutions. Hopefully, one of them applies for you.

It looks like some setting issue. But since you didn't tell anything about what exactly you did when you were "trying to create a home network" it's impossible to say if you did something wrong or forgot something.

Continuing!

OK, Kees, thanks, that helped: changing the local security policy. That is, I can acces both PC's from one another and I can acces both PC's from the media player that I have near my TV. But for now there are some serious limitations it seems:

1 The access is only to the USERS folder on the system disk, not to any other folder or harddisk on the PC's. And within the USERS folder it does not show the main USER!

2 On the PC's I do not see the media player as being part of the Network. I was hoping to send data to the mediaplayer from the pc's as a local storage for my family.

Is there a way around these limitations?

3 I also don't see how I should make use of the PC's and TV being in the same network. Is there some way that I could send data to the TV directly from the pc's?

1. That's true

Microsoft changed that years ago to stymie security issues. There are some thousands of posts about "Can't share the C drive" which cover this from many angles.

2. Media Player as in ChromeCast or something else? Here I just start Chrome and use it's cast feature.

3. Now that's a big question. At no time did Microsoft or any company unify all these. We are building our own solutions. SOME but few TVs have DLNA and if you look into that, another fine mess.
