Home net work-preventing access.

Jan 31, 2006 9:33AM PST

Windows XP Pro SP2. On DSL. Networked connected to D-Link DI-714P+ wireless router. Two other computers connects to the network wirelessly. What do I so that the two other computers(and outside computers within range) need to enter a password or the SSID to access the network ? I am able to change the SSID and channel on the 714P, but the two computers can automatically detect the new SSID and connect. The main purpose is to prevent underaged children from accessing the Internet unsupervised, and to prevent neighbors from using the accesspoint for free. Thanks.

You have to enabled the wireless security. With it anyone trying to use your network will have to have the password. Once enable you can save the passphrase to each of your wireless pcs and then disable the SSID broadcast so no one will be able to find and thereby use your internet connection. Use the 128 or 256 WEP settings.

When you save the password, then everyone

using that pc have access to the internet,

Also use Mac Address Filtering, so only a computer in which the mac address have been listed, can have access to the internet.

PLUS... add a password on the PC (give the kids a Limited user account) and..

configure your router for Internet Access Time limit (When and how long)

of your computer network card, go to start, run, type command, enter, type ipconfig /all

look at the result.. please note, if your computer have more than 1 card (i.e. 1 ethernet and 1 wireless), then there is also two mac addresses...

I checked with the other computers when connected. There is no "MAC address" as such mentioned, but is it "Ethernet NIC physical address" ?

yup, thats the number you need...
Feb 2, 2006 1:05AM PST

Physical Address. . . : XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX

enter that number in your router mac address filtering (this is will be the mac address that are allowed to connect)

On some configuration page, you may need to write as:
XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

Just look and follow what the instruction say... and use some common sense too.
