Or maybe it's scary BECAUSE of who is in the White House -- two oil millionaires who shout "KA-CHING!!!" every time oil prices go up. And now we're in for four more years of it. Sad

In 1973 heating oil in my area was 18 cents per gallon. In the "oil crisis" during the Carter administration it rose to just under a dollar. Then, around the time we changed our heating system to natural gas around 1990, it had reached about $1.20.

We always did OK re: the available supply, but it seemed like every year there has been a shortage in the Northeast. where the use of it is more prevalent.

We are being told that our natural gas prices will rise because of "low supply". That means that public utility generators that run on it will face a rise in operating cost which means we will pay more for electricity. As I live in an area served by TVA, I'm luckier than some as there are dams that generate the power, along with some coal-fired ones.

But utility costs will go up for us all, no matter how we heat. And the demand expected with a predicted very cold winter will cause concerns, as well.

I'll give you 3 guesses where my natural gas comes from, and the first 2 don't count. Happy

some may find they will get some diesel fuel for the home this winter if they run short.

Maybe from the refineries but I hope not, unless they clean it up. More expensive and burns dirtier. Not recommended at least from the pump stand point.

Prices around here: (pump prices)
Diesel.......2.30 to 2.40 All Hwy. taxes included.
Home Oil.....1.90 to 2.00
Gas..........1.98 to 2.09

Oil company just offered me a price of $2.04 a gallon. I think I will have to take it even if it turns out to be as much or more than gasoline which is now $2.19 per gallon. Still have about a cord of wood which I will use when it gets really cold to help for a week or two.

Cant get natural gas where I live as it is not available
and there are no plans to draw pipelines . Also it is now illegal to use propane.

Just curious...

Why was propane made illegal? I know that the tanks sitting in the yard are not very attractive. Perhpas they are considered to be targets for vandals, as well.

They did it because they claim having those two big tanks against the house is a fire hazard. That prohibition went into effect at least 15 years ago after a fire and explosion occurred involving one home.
The law banned the installation of new tanks. Slowly they have disappeared. I dont see them anymore when i ride around the area!

They can place the tanks 20 ft or so away from a structure and run a line back. That's the setup at both my grandparents years ago.

Fossil fuels will keep getting more expensive ...
by Evie / November 4, 2004 5:34 AM PST

... as the economies of China and India increase demand with a dwindling supply. If you want to fault anyone, fault the greenies here. Oil is pretty much being pumped at a rate that the refineries can process them operating at full capacity. Until the NIMBY crowd gives an inch, supply will remain limited and with increased demand, prices will go up. But rejoice! There is no greater way to "force" conservation on us wasteful Americans than to hit us in the pocketbook. You should be happy!
