Home and search page Hijacked

Feb 27, 2004 7:43AM PST

My home and search pages are being hijacked by scheo.com. I've installed and am using hijackthis and browser hijack blaster but continue to see warnings from those about the resetting of the home and search pages. I can't seem to get rid of it. I've run spybot S&D and Adaware as well.

Ron,

Download and run HijackThis - get it here:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates: "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the link below.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

and post your "hijackthis.log". There are the experts and they will tell you what to do.

Good Luck!

Messenger Plus 2
Feb 27, 2004 2:13PM PST

Hi Ron,

I saw your log and searched for MessengerPLus2 and indeed it has spyware !

the latest MSN Messenger Plus! has spyware. And, according to SpywareInfo.com, it is the Lop.com component, which is one of the most difficult to detect and remove. As such, I now withdraw my recommendation for this product and will alter all pages on this site which promote it to reflect this.

Marianne, I have seen conflicting information on this and would like to see further comments and experience from users who have declined the "optional sponsor feature" in the setup process. The setup very clearly gives the option to decline the sponsor feature. I wonder if the complainers are those that have agreed to accept the spyware. I don't know but would like more information on that point. I do find the automatic backup feature worthwhile as I frequently need to refer back for details or accuracy of a conversation. Other comments I see:

"It's What Make Messenger Worthwhile"
I've been using Messenger Plus for several years now, and never has it caused me any problems. The features are great. If you don't want to install the optional sponsor feature, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! It allows you to by-pass this, so don't cry if you agree to install the sponsor. I've been using Messenger Plus for several years now, and never has it caused me any problems. The features are great. If you don't want to install the optional sponsor feature, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!"

"Excellent! Don't be put off by people complaining!"
This is an excellent program, very useful. Once installed you have access to countless other plugins and there is promise of many more excellent features to come! There is NO trogan in this software, it is very secure! The people complaining about the ad toolbar CHOSE to have it installed! Use ur heads people!"

I might add that I am very security conscious using all the protective software usually recommended by this forum. Never have I had any problem using this Messenger add-on. Am puzzled and would like some input from people using the software who have not accepted the "optional sponsor feature"

Thanks!

Hi Marianna Happy

Thanks for your work on this and the link provided. I note this and most all the other adverse comments were written early or mid 2003. That was about the time the new software was revised to include the "optional sponsor feature" and I feel confident many did not read the setup fine print and voluntarily accepted this intrusive feature. This is somewhat like the Google Toolbar where unless you opt out then you get the full "works" Wink.

When there is some time my plans are to look into this further and perhaps submit a HijackThis log for analysis. If there is any clarification I will make a new post for all to see the results.

In my case there has been no problems with this software and I do believe that I am malware free.

Thanks again and have a great weekend!

Glenn
