Now you know what "DC" from DC Comics

Since I was a professional artist in the comics industry...

for over twenty years I have to laugh at PR spin like this. There have been gay and lesbian characters in the past. This is just desperation because sales are not so hot.

If your grandkids are comics readers they already know and are probably not stunned by this.

But, they got mentioned in the papers...

Ever since the lucrative transformation of Bat Man
Jun 1, 2006 3:15AM PDT

into the Dark Knight... Marvel and DC (along with idependents) have realized that "edgy" sells comic books. Look at Frank Miller and the success of "Sin City"... As Ed says, it isn't anything new. My parents (really it was Mom) forbid me back in the late 60's early 70's from buying comics after they found and read some of the horror rags (Tales from the Crypt, Fangoria) that I had bought with my allowance. Late 70's and early eighties I got into adult comics such as "Heavy Metal" magazine... Lots of sex and violence in space suits and/or loin cloths going on there. Great art though.

Check out the anime, manga, and hentai that has come from Japan and suddenly Cat Woman liking the ladies aint nothing.

'Joke', Brokeback Deputies (Not related to Batwoman)
Jun 2, 2006 2:46AM PDT

Some retired deputy sheriffs went to a retreat in the mountains. To save money, they decided to sleep two to a room. No one wanted to room with Daryl because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns.

The first deputy slept with Daryl and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you?" He said, "Daryl snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."

The next night it was a different deputy's turn. In the morning, same thing--hair all standing up, eyes all blood-shot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful!" He said, "Man, that Daryl! shakes the roof. I watched him all night."

The third night was Frank's turn. Frank was a big burly ex-football player; a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright eyed and bushy tailed. "Good morning," he said.

They couldn't believe it! They said, "Man, what happened?" He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Daryl into bed and kissed him good night. He sat up and watched me all night long."

In comics circles...
Jun 1, 2006 8:41PM PDT

that has been long discussed, lampooned, argued, etc. Remember, we're talking about people who dress up in garish skintight costumes and prowl around the city at night, and the 12 year olds who fantasize about them. So yes, they are weird. Some of the fans are very weird, believe me.

Back in the fifties Fredereic Wetham brought up the homoerotic nature of the Batman/Robin relationship in his infamous Seduction of the Innocent.

He is such an authentic character...

it's scary. I know him; many of him. There's very little exaggeration there at all.

But that is SO true.....
Jun 2, 2006 2:49AM PDT

That is so true.

For example and I'm just making an observation here
but I bought the DVD of Serenity and on the 2nd disk
there was a recording of a whole Q and A session with
Joss Whedon who made the movie with fans in Sydney.

Now panning across the audience there was about half
to 3/4 of the fans that fitted the stereotype for
fans of this kind of movie. ie: fat and overweight
geeky looking people. I kid you not.

I don't know what they put on the R1 version of
this DVD but that is what we got on the R4 version
and I honestly could not stop laughing at how serious
some of the audience questions were. And how much
detail the fans knew of the movie and series Firefly
that they would ask such questions.

It was scary to watch.

and I think they lampooned this kind of thing very
well in the movie "Galaxy Quest" too which is a bit
of a 'must see' for fans of the scifi genre.

Saturday Night Live
Jun 2, 2006 3:12AM PDT

was hosted by William Shatner some years back. They lampooned the SciFi convention atmosphere when Bill Shatner while on the podium told the nerd (geek?) participants to "get a life folks" or something to that effect.

I've never been to one but did do military reenactments for years as a teen and young adult. I imagine the atmosphere is somewhat similar. Wink

that's a good read
Jun 1, 2006 9:18PM PDT

some 'scholar' has always tried to blame the arts for the evils of society. if that is true than the positive effects of art must be true. that's why I am a big fan of 'free will' and not 'predetermination'. naivete is not a good quality for decision making.
and you are right about the costume emulation, just check out the above and under ground club scenes in 'anywhere, usa'.
