My Mitsubishi did the same... Take one piece of advice. Unplug it till you get it fixed since you can smoke more stuff by trying to power it up.
In my case a (power) module had indeed died and it was (indeed) proprietary. I paid about 300 to get it fixed. Well worth it...

Hello,
Well, today my beloved Hitachi 46" rear projection tv that I got approximately 14 years ago didn't turn on any more I press power and I hear that sound that I usually hear as it is turning on (somewhat of a click) and at first I saw a glimmer of that red light and then no power. Now, I have tried it over and over and over and now I just hear the sound bet never any power and no red light. I plugged the tv into a different socket and everything. I am guessing it is my power supply because the same thing happened to a computer of mine and that is what it was. So, if you agree that it is probably the power supply - how difficult is that to replace, where do I get one, how do I replace it and what does it look like? If I just don't understand how to do this then how much should I expect to pay a local tv repair guy to come and do this? Can I order the part on my own? Thanks everyone If anyone is in NW Indiana and would like to fix this please let me know
