Hitachi 42HDX62 for $2400. Is this a good Plasma?

by pn56matt / August 19, 2006 3:44 AM PDT

I am looking for a 40-42" Plasma or LCD with a nice solid black or black piano finish. I have my eyes on the Hitachi, but want to be sure that it'll work well with my viewing/gaming needs. I think its native resolution is only 1080i, but don't think that should be too much a problem. How would you compare this to the newer 42" Samsungs (Plasma and LCD), LGs, and Sony XBR Bravia's. What do you all think? This Hitachi is the Director's Series Flagship that sold for $5000 - $5500 at release.
I'll be using the tv with DirectTV, DVD and Xbox

Also, the tv will be going in a 10'x10' room with no furniture. I found a 22" stand. Will the tv be too high up when laying on the ground watching it?

I appreciate your help and input...Matt

I prefer the Pioneer / Panasonic to Hitachi
by mikefromboston / August 19, 2006 12:19 PM PDT

If you looking for good design/aesthetics go for the Hitachi. Hitachi's black levels aren't of reference quality and the picture is not that sharp. But if you are going to use it for gaming then it's worth every cents coz ALIS panels are the most resistant to burn-in.

Hitachi Sharpness & Black levels
by pn56matt / August 20, 2006 1:28 AM PDT

I've read about the black levels not being the greatest, but I thought they were still pretty good. I think the sharpness can be worked with. I would go for a Pioneer or Elite, but they are quite a bit more expensive. I'm not sure I could justify $800+ more.

Will the 1080i native resolution ever cause a problem with programs broadcast in 720p. I'm still pretty new at this and don't understand the downcoverting/upconverting and deinterlacing stuff.

Then go for the HITACHI
by mikefromboston / August 20, 2006 2:10 PM PDT

If you aren't concerned with the sharpness then HITACHI would be a ideal choice. The ALIS panels are supposed to work at it's best with Interlaced feeds. As per legacy, they are supposed to last longer than any other plasma panels. It's better to go for a upscaling dvd player with 1080i. Please consider Pioneer PDP-4270.
