Hi guys, not sure if anyone can help but I am taking you back a few years -
I currently live in Kenya as an expat and have been given a desktop PC which i was hoping to upgrade so that the children can use for homework etc however when i try and install extra ram the computer beeps and will not start.
Specs are as follow -

CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8400@3.00Ghz Wolfdale 45nm Technology
Motherboard HP 3048h (XU1 Processor)
Operating on Windows 7 professional with current RAM as 2GB DDR3 @531mhz (7-7-7-20) Samsung brand
The RAM i am trying to install is 4 lots of 4GB DDR3 Samsung brand.

When i try to replace the RAM i get a 5 beep flashing red light and it will not boot up.
Am i wasting time or should I get a new motherboard ?
Bear in mind i cannot just pop down to a local computer centre as i am in a bit of a remote area however there is a 2nd hand market where i could possibly pick something up so long as i know what i actually need.

Also if anyone can help ithere is a graphics card installed but not recognised. I have no idea of its specs. Is it possibly installed wrong or should I get a new one - if so what can this PC handle.

Thanks for any help you can give and please try and keep instructions simple as I am not anywhere near being a PC expert lol

Thanks Ian

Clarification Request
Such a machine should be usable for homework.

My mom had an even older laptop with the dual core Centrino and 1GB RAM running Windows 10 off a SSD (drive.) It would boot in under a minute and be on the web ready to go. She could play card games and write Word documents.

As to your RAM all that shows is that RAM is incompatible.

I'd put the machine back to how it worked and use it.

just seems a shame to waste 16gb of RAM lol

It's not wasted.

I'm sure there's some PC it's compatible with.

I am sure i can find use for it lol

On another note would it be a good idea to buy a new motherboard suitable for the RAM ? It does not have to be the latest turbo nutter sort but if i could also use this PC for GIS and photo editing it would be great.

However i do realise for a novice like myself i could actually be asking for even more problems lol

Have to write not a good idea. Why?

Windows 7 and most of the versions don't take well to such a change so you might have to find a Windows license and be skilled at install Windows and the work you do after you install.

In other words, would create more problems.

Thanks R Proffit must admit it was a bit of a desperate last idea seeing as i have already hit problems doing a simple RAM upgrade lol.

Any thoughts on the graphics card ? Can't give any info as a) the PC does not recognise it so i do not even know it's specs and b) there is no info written on it so struggling to even guess it's brand.

Was even thinking of replacing it but with my limited PC knowledge and even more limited knowledge of what the computer can actually handle I think it might be just a casual thought

There are way too many GPUs (Graphics cards.)
Jun 17, 2018 10:31AM PDT

At 2GB this is a homework machine and should be fine on the web and YouTube. To find out what the machine is made of I use Speccy.

Read how to share a report at https://www.piriform.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web

BUT READ THIS!!! -> If you post that here the spambot will eat the post and a moderator will have to go get it. That's not a big deal. But don't post it 15 times.

As to RAM, I like Crucial.com and such since they will get me the right RAM.

As to GPUs, I see no reason to change it yet. It's a homework machine, not for gaming.

Mobo

The mobo you listed has 2 ram slots.

How did you plan on installing 4 sticks?

Mobo

It has 4 slots - but even just putting one stick in still got the same error. Now trying to get hold of the slower speed RAM and trying that out.
With regards to Mobo i was given the info by a Speccy scan so relied on that. As i mentioned i am a bit of a newbie to upgrading etc so tend to trust whatever info I am given lol

Answer
That processor was released in 2008

andis discontinued so that RAM specs are old. You have to look for RAM compatible with it which could be hard to find.

am now hunting for some DDR 3 with a lower speed - stand by for an advert from me selling 4 sticks of DDR 3 4gb 1600mhz lol
Will let you know if i am successful in a less ambitious upgrade and i seriously appreciate the help and advice you guys have given me.
