Hijacked Browser

Nov 24, 2004 7:00AM PST

I spent almost three hours on the phone last night with Micrsoft AND Comcast Support people, and we were still not able to get rid of whatever is infecting my computer. The person at Microsoft told me he had tried EVERYTHING to help me, but nothing was working. And Comcast said that I had a very good connection to the internet, but whenever I open up Explorer, the homepage is set to "about:blank" and won't change to anything else. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Has anyone else had this happen and been able to fix it WITHOUT reformatting the hard drive?

What anti-virus protection do you use? A lot of people here use more than one or two. Have a look at;
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&messageID=15002

I would add SpywareBlaster to that suite, from;
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

And I would ensure I have a good firewall installed like ZoneAlarm, from http://www.zonelabs.com

These are all free. Most of them need to be installed, run, updated, and except for SpywareBlaster and ZoneAlarm, scan your disk regularly. SpywareBlaster protects without the need for scanning, and ZoneAlarm resides in memory.

If running and scanning these do not fix your IE problem, try IEFix from here;
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Come back if you still have problems.

Could you provide some more information about your problem. Your post is headed "hijacked browser", so there must be more you can tell us. Do you have access to internet sufficient to download a program? If so, search google for a much more secure, superior free browser called Mozilla-Firefox. It is much harder to hijack than the secrurity hole Internet Explorer. If you have a Netscape CD, load that and get Internet connected with it so you can download mozilla
Meanwhile, try running the free Spyware-Adware utility called AdAware and Spyware Blaster, as well as Spybot search and destroy. All are free downloads. Run all of them. Also download a free utility called BHO Demon, read instructions thorougly for all these free utilities. If you have not installed the free Windows Service Pack 2, do so-- assuming you run Win XP

you can get adaware and spybot from cnet downloads and here is the link to house call:http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

1. shut off system restore or your problem will come back.
2. run adaware,look for running processes in adaware and shut them down. look for paths to these processes in windows folder to delete them.
3. while in windows folder make sure you have only one Explorer.exe. If you have more than one delete the ones with numbers.
4. run spybot spyware cleaner.
5. run housecall to get rid of the main hidden trojan.
6. reboot and make sure about:blank is gone.
7. turn back on system restore.
8. make sure you have at least xp service pack 1

I had the same problem, I tried every piece of adware removal software I could find, I searched the internet high and low, but nothing worked. I finally got rid of my problem.
First, I saw this posted on another site, when the about:blank page is opened on the menu bar click on "view" and go to "source", look at the very bottom of the page and see if by chance their is an option to unsubscribe. This might work if your home page is being highjacked by an ad.
Second, I use STOPzilla as a popup blocker, in the "tools", "advanced options" menu you can have stopzilla protect your homepage and you can enter the homepage address you want....this was the answer to my problem.

Advise everyone you know to dump IE and move to Firefox browser. It is far superior and you will never runinto issuies like this again. Much nbetter code for browsing the internet.
