High School Rodeo come to town

May 6, 2006 3:49PM PDT

All of the High School Rodeo organization throughout the State of New Mexico held their annual Rodeo here this weekend, May 5 - 7. Thought I would give you a "behind the scenes" look.

This is a photo intensive 1.5MB file.

Beautiful pictures. And those horse trailers, wow. They sure ride in style.

Back in the 70s and 80s a good friend and co-worker of mine owned a horse farm on the other side of town. He boarded, trained and raced. It was all Sulky harness racing. Very spirited horses. I used to go over there a lot. Helped build a training track and refit the many different vehicles he hauled them in. Mostly old box vans. He never had a real fancy horse trailer. Great guy and friend. Died at the track about 10 years ago. Farm is all gone now. But your article brought back memories of what he used to haul the horses in. Raced mostly at local tracks. Rockingham Park in NH. Scarboro Downs in Maine. Foxboro, MA and a lot of the NE fairs. The trucks somehow always made it back, but I think some of those nags he raced did'nt. He used to say, if they can't at least run somewhere up near the front they ain't worth hauling back home.

They sure do have some beautiful horse trailers at that Rodeo

New Mexico, probably like Texas, has a lot of Ranchers who build Rodeo arena's with pens/gates, lights & all for practice. The youngsters appreciate that, and many of the arena's can be seen from the highway/road not far from cities/towns.

I'm an immigrant, but I've seen this and more. Gotta remember there's no Major League sports in NM, so High School sports of all kinds are big.

I've met some barrel racing girls, since they invariably end up as State Fair Queens, who are our ''celebrity spokesmodels'' for supermarket openings and such. They are beautiful inside and out, and very mature. (16 going on 30!) I recommend barrel racing and calf roping to all as entertainment. Just wish they would drop bull riding, especially since it's the one event not at all related to 'cowboying.' Too dangerous for kids, IMO. Sad

And now y'all know just what's inside those trailers you pass. (And of course the animals are in more comfort than their owners. Happy )

Thanks, Del.
