High cpu usage

Jul 11, 2010 1:54AM PDT

Hey my cpu usage is constantly running at about 50% or higher. My computer is also unusually hot at the bottom. I've solved the problem by putting my computer back to factory settings several times but the problem always comes back.

I'm running a an HP dv5 1159se with core 2 duo, vista service pack 2, 4 gigs ram, 320 hard drive.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

questioning your system
Jul 12, 2010 6:22AM PDT

My HP8100e is presently idling at 2-8% each core, and RAM use is 45%. I have a 32 bit system with 4 gigs.
Do you have 32 or 64 bit? What measuring program are you referencing?

Laptop bottom's get hot. Get a laptop cooler, you'll need to get the correct size for your laptop, many local Big Box stores carry them. Also:

processes

What are you running in the background? click on 'see processes for all users'. Sort the processes by CPU use. What is that program? I

Try to disable any unneeded processes, services, and automatic start up programs that you don't use. Make sure you set a restore point before doing this. Go to the start> search > type in msconfig.
Go to the Services tab. Un-check any services that you do not need. Do the same with the startup tab. Remember not to disable any security programs as they are needed.

Services that can be safely disabled:

Smart Card, Smart card removeal Policy, Anything with the word 'remote' on the list, secondary logon (If you have the only account on the laptop, if more then one user the leave it alone), Print spooler (if you don't have a printer), Tablet PC input Service

A laptop cooler will help. Also make sure that you do not block any of the vents on the bottom of the laptop.
