High Capacity 6GB+ Flash Availability?

Dec 6, 2005 5:14AM PST

I have a trusty old Archos Studio 10 that has lasted through years of abuse w/ my mountain bike where others have fallen apart. It is just too big and clunky, though.
I would like to get a (non Apple) Flash player w/ at least 6GB capacity and FM. No video necessary.
Shuffle and playlists would be cool.
Anyone have a line on when something like this will be available?? Maybe from Cowon or iRiver?

that such a beast does not exist.
4Gb seems to be about the limit for flash right now

I could be wrong though.

in the future, maybe...

but right now, only Apple has the capital to offer anything more than 2gb of flash at an affordable, marketable price. I expect that in about six months, apple with come out with a 6gb ipod nano that's gonna be a bit thicker and Creative will release flash versions of the zen micro.

says "coming soon" ????
I was hoping for at least 5GB but I could live with 4, especially at that price!

the sansa m260 hasn't been released yet, it was originally planned for release with the other variations in the m200 line, but because of the price of flash storage these days, Sandisk has decided not to release it untuil January. So as of right now, the ipod nano IS the ONLY 4gb flash player on the market.

NANO
Dec 6, 2005 8:48AM PST

If only the Ipod Nano didn't scratch that easily, and had a removable battery I would have gotten it in a second.

it doesn't

it doesn't scratch that easily as long as you don't do something dumb like stick it in ur pocket with ur keys. I have an plastic "invisible shield" on mine now and it still looks brand new, no visible scratches. Oh, btw HeroZero, the nano certainly isn't "fragile" like so many ipod bashers tend to rant about. They base their assumptions on how the nano looks from pictures. I've dropped my nano countless times and i've even sat on it, and pressed on it HARD with my fingers, trust me, it's indestructable. I still think the nano is a better deal than the sansa even for the same price since the sansa is a lot bulkier and heavier than the nano and using a AAA battery to power it seems like a joke to me. But, of course thats just me.
Btw, Trooper i hope you find good use for your Zen micro Happy

The Ipod Nano is extremely tempting though! I can't make up my mind. I just wish the battery was removable so if anything were to happen I would be able to fix it without having to dish out another $249.99 CDD. Other than that I'm gonna get a new phone that will have microphone features as well as an FM tuner if I REALLY needed it.

where is this money coming from? haha
Dec 6, 2005 9:19AM PST

how do you have enough money after you've bought a portable dvd player already and still be able to dish out 250 for an mp3 player and a new phone? rich grandparents? put in a good word for me.
btw, if the battery dies in an ipod after the 1yr warrenty, you can send it in to get replaced for $60, but then again, you'll probably want to dish out the cha-ching for the next gen ipod, probably ipod nano-video 6/8gb

I work...

I bought the DVD player a year ago so i have shitload of extra cash collecting dust in my bank account. What better way then to spoil myself with an MP3 player and a new cell phone. And you're right about the Ipod Nano, by the time it dies, a new player would have came out but something's telling me to go with the Micro Photo.

Nano battery...
Dec 7, 2005 3:38AM PST

The AAA battery is a huge advantage over the Nano battery, I would think. I hear that the Nano batteries are aketchy to say the least. If I can get 20+ hours out of a RECHARGABLE NiMH AAA....well...sounds good to me.

I think I will hold out for a 5 or 6 GB Flash, though.
Shouldn't be too long (I hope)...

AAA battery = Size+Weight
Dec 7, 2005 3:50AM PST

keep in mind that the AAA baterry altho providing more energy per charge than a lithium ion one, also takes up MUCH more room on an mp3 player, thus it makes the Sansa m200 series a lot less sleek than it could have been. However, it costs the company a lot less to produce players this way which is the reason why the sansas are so cheap. And stop listening to the ipod bashers about the nano's battery, it works fine and even if for some reason you get a faulty one, Apple's excellent service will have it replaced very quickly.
Oh, and keep on dreaming about the 5 or 6gb flash, apple's the only company on the market with enough money for that anytime soon.
