Hidden text in images

Nov 15, 2010 8:50PM PST

I have a .gif image that I'm certain contains hidden text. I have tried Steganography without success. I have run it through a HEX editor but nothing "jumps out", can anybody suggest something, please?

Why do you think so?

GIFs can be animated and so it is possible that there is some subliminal message in one or more of the frames, but if it is a static image then what you see is what you get.

Why do you think there is some hidden message in this image?

If this were me I would just try Notepad first of all. Either drag the file into an open Notepad window, or right click the file, select "Open with" and choose Notepad, but making sure that the "Always use this application to open this type of file" is not selected.

If the file is large, more than a few hundred KBs then Wordpad would be better.

It's part of a puzzle

Hi Mark,
This .gif image is part of a puzzle to find coordinates to a cache, and as there is nothing else on the page, the info must be in the picture.

I tried loading it in Notepad, but there again I can't see anything that makes sense.

Thank you for replying.

If you want others to pitch in you may want to tell that as well as the site of the contest that may contain the rest of the needed details.

These type of puzzles don't usually have 'hidden message images' in my limited experience. They are usually cryptic, for example an image of a particular type of flower or plant may hold the clue in the flower/plant name.

I wouldn't expect a competition like this one to use encrypted messages in an image coding to proceed further in the game.

Well, you may be right

Yes, perhaps you're right. I will have to approach this from a different angle.
Thank you everyone for your effort and for trying to help.
