Question

Hibernation Issue

Jan 26, 2015 6:44PM PST

I am having issues when resuming my Dell XPS 15 (Late 2013 edition) from a hibernated state.

When I have many windows open at the same time (for example: 4 browser windows, Microsoft Word, and Excel) and I hibernate my PC, when I eventually proceed take my PC out of its hibernated state I find that the windows that I had opened are no longer responsive. My cursor moves around the screen, I am able to interact with the task bar, and interestingly, I am able to use the Start menu interface and the Metro-style apps without any problems. However I cannot interact with any windows nor their contents when in Desktop mode. This is a very frustrating problem as I regularly place my PC in hibernate mode. More often than not this problem occurs when I try to resume my work, forcing me to restart my PC, losing all my unsaved files and browser pages.

What could the issue be related to? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer
I've NEVER had that problem...

...in Linux, and I've had it "live" for over 100 days at a time!
That has got to be a really irritating happening. Is this just on webpages, or things open in other programs like text editors and spreadsheet programs? Is it full hibernation where the computer goes off, or rather is it Sleep, where the computer stays on during this time?

BIOS settings can affect how Sleep and Hibernation works, usually there's a setting between S1 and S3 you can choose.

https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2007/01/10/all-about-system-power-states-s0-s5

You do know that when you "shutdown" windows 8 instead it now goes into "hibernate" mode? I suspect you are speaking of "sleep" mode since you didn't say it was a shutdown.

The one thing that will affect sleep mode quicker than anything is glitchy RAM. It keeps getting refreshed and then glitches, some bits are lost here and there, and suddenly something's not working correctly when it's "woke up". Power fluctuations can do that too, so if those are common where you live, try a power backup unit to keep the flow smoother.

Further info...

Thanks James for your help... It happens with all programs, not just webpages - and it happens when I put my computer into full hibernation (i.e. the computer goes off). I have checked out the links you posted but none of the setting changes I make seem to make any difference.

The problem now also occasionally happens whilst I am actually in the middle of using my computer. The screen goes dark for a few seconds and when it resumes, I get a popup message on the taskbar saying "The Intel Display Driver has stopped working". Once again, all windows become virtually 100% unresponsive. So I am now thinking the issue could be related to the display driver, but have no idea how to proceed from here.

Do have any further ideas/suggestions? Many thanks again.

That's a driver failure, not Hibernation.

I'd ask Dell how to resolve since it's such a new model.

For over a decade

I close apps (some call them windows) that I can prior to hibernation since not all apps can deal with hibernation.

I also know to save prior to hibernation in case hibernation fails. Has anyone chatted with safe PC operation?
