Hibernation apparent failure

Nov 21, 2004 2:32AM PST

After installing SP2 a friend reports to me that although he assigns hibernation to the power switch, it does not complete the hybernation The computer stays on. I told him to uninstall SP2 and then follow a certain procedure (spelled out in one of these forum threads) to prepare properly and reinstall SP2. Any suggestions on why SP2 causes this? Frank

Let's try the usual. Not only do I see the owner take SP2, but accept a driver from Microsoft. That second item (driver) was what I usually find to be at issue.

To recover we roll back SP2 and more to get it working, then we try again...

Motherboard drivers may need updating, but Microsoft doesn't do these...

In closing, you post didn't tell any detail about the machine so I can't comment further.

I'll be getting more information. For now he tells me that he uninstalled SP2 and XP worked fine. But on reinsalling SP2 he had the same problem: In SP2 when assigning hibernate to the power switch, computer will not turn off. However, he says the drives power down.

Not your machine?

This is going to be very difficult to discuss since all information will be relayed or just not available.

Maybe they should try the machine maker's support too?
