Hi ya'll, self plug again, my wife and I went on trip

May 7, 2006 2:26PM PDT

a couple of weeks ago to visit her sis and BIL in southern Oregon.

She's barely had time to get the editing started while I was back on the gridestone routine at work. Again we had about 2 gigabyte of photos when we got home. Many were dups, rejects, or just soso. So now my wife's job is to straighten it all out and get up uploaded to webshots.

She's only done a few so far of Crater Lake. The ranger was saying they had over 100 inches more than average snowfall. The snow bank was probably 15 foot high around the parking lot and road on the way up. The ranger station was accessible through a back 'tunnel' entrance under the snow rather than the front door. The viewing tube they have to let you look almost straight down into the lake was just showing about a foot above the snow. We were actually standing on the snow bank even with the end of the tube at one point before someone pointed out all we were standing on was snow piled up the slope. Basically we were standing on a snowbank out past the rim.

We backed up some after than notion.

Anwway, here's the first few. Hopefully my wife will get time to add a few each week, but it's a busy time around here right now. A few home projects are going on and such you know.

I've never seen that much snow myself

But the day we were there wasn't so terribly cold. In fact, we forgot our jackets that morning because it was warm where we were staying.

So we walked around on top of the snow banks in shirt sleeves and jeans. It really wasn't uncomfortable to just before we left, when we walked further along the snow bank on the rim to get where we could see the Phantom Ship. There is a picture labelled path to see the Phantom Ship in the set posted. As we walked along the rim for a far distance to get an angle to see the Phantom Ship, the wind came up and it got a bit nippy.

But it was a good day.

That area has to be getting really unsafe as the snow starts to melt along the rim and slides down into the crater. A couple of spots on the way to the vantage point for the Phantom Ship I broke through the crust and sunk up to my knee in snow. Of course, I'm rather heavy and except where traffic had packed it, snow doesn't normally hold up much weight.

You were in my backyard!!

Well, almost, anyway. Happy

Crater Lake is about a 2 hour drive from here. Last time we were up there was July '04. We spent the night at the lodge (stayed in the top right corner room that you can see in your photo. Watched the sun go down and then come up over the lake. Beautiful!!). After that we went to the Oregon Caves and spent the night there in the Chateau after taking the tour through the caves (which I hadn't done since I was about 10 or so).

I had posted a few of my pics in my Yahoo! Photo Album page after our trip. It looks much different in July than in May, but there was still some snow around the rim even then. Seeing Crater Lake both with and without all the snow is a treat. One of the most beautiful sights in the world (IMO).

The benefits of going up there in Summer is more access sites for viewing and picture-taking, as well as being able to go into the Lodge. After having breakfast there when we stayed overnight, we sat out front with our coffee and visited while watching the world wake up around us. Happy

Glad you got to come over here. I like my little corner of the world.

Take care,
--Marcia

Pssssst, you forgot to plug your link

Wink LOL.

I was thinking you were in northern Oregon. We had discussed an overnight trip to Portland, but it didn't work out that way. I was thinking of trying to get in touch if we travelled that way, but our time was pretty full anyway as it turned out.

We decided we wanted to go back in warmer weather, but I don't know when the possibility may present itself. It's a long trip from east coast to west coast, and they don't give away the tickets either.

Beautiful country. My inlaws new house has a second floor deck that looks out over the valley to the mountains on the other side of a valley, without being high enough to get much snow at their location.

We saw the Oregon caves online before going, and saw the signs on a trip down to California border, but didn't get there. Honestly, though we have been in caves and enjoyed them, looking at the online photos and descriptions the climb through them looked worse than the hikes we took on trails to waterfalls, Watson, Tokatee, and Burney (in California). Several other we had hoped to stop at in the range near Crater lake with Watson and Tokatee still had the roads blocked by snow and/or the park gates were still closed.

I didn't forget it ..........

... this is your thread for photos. Happy (I thought about mine, of course, when I looked at yours, and I looked back through them. For some weird reason it appears that the order that I put them in has changed. There are Oregon Cave and Crater Lake pics intermixed with each other. They weren't that way before. Hmmmmm .... must be the same poltergeist that rearranges my keyboard on occasion! LOL)

Anyway, Nope! I does be right here in South Central Oregon. In the Southerly direction, I am only 15 miles from the California border. High Desert Country. At an elevation of about 4900 feet. We get our share of snow here, and sometimes some extra (like this year. We just this last week melted off the almost 12" we got on Easter morning.)

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. I look forward to seeing the rest of the pics as your wife finishes with them and gets them put up for public display.

LOL, hijack away, I did your last one I think.

I won't mind a bit other such links/posts by others in "my thread" if it reminds them of something and they want to add it here rather than start a new one.

I almost waited till we had more photos edited and uploaded, but with everything going on around here right now, that may be a few at the time process.

We travelled down Interstate 5 to California for the Burney falls visit. And we dipped into California another day to travel back up the Oregon coast a ways.

Ok, I was suppose to update this a few days ago,
May 22, 2006 10:44AM PDT

but my lousy memory forgot it.

Anyway, it seems my wife has finished uploading pictures from our trip to Oregon (and a little bit of California). So for anyone that wanted a bit more, it's there.

For the rest, that think I'm about as worrisome about this as grandparents pulling shots of grandkids out of their wallet..........

You know, you may be right, LOL, but we enjoyed it and the pictures are great. We post them so I inform (or annoy, chuckling) people with the links and announcements.

BTW, thanks for the compliments about pictures. And I want to make it perfectly clear that many, in fact most of the ones for the last year are my wife's. We both had digital cameras before Yosemite, but we bought a new one just before that trip, and it's normally in her hands. (Only fair since mine is newer than her former one.) She normally gets the better shot, so we keep and post more of hers.

Anyway, those that want to can groan, those that want to can enjoy.
