General discussion

Hi pitch noise coming from PC

Feb 24, 2006 10:39PM PST

It seems like it is coming from the Power supply but note sure. Replaced cpu heat sink/fan, installed a new exhaust fan & removed the side fan because the new cpu unit was to large. This only leaves the PS fan.

The noise is intermittent and started off as very short duration. Now when it starts it goes on for hours so I started wearing ear plugs.

P4 3.2 ghs, 1 gig ram, XP SP2, pc out of warranty.

Do you think I'm right about it being the PS? I don't mind spending the money for a replacement but don't want to do it just to be wrong. PC was very well put together with all cables neatly tied away and don't really want to rip them out unless there isn't any other option.

I?m not looking for somebody to provide a magic bullet but just offer any reasonable alternatives.

Thanks,

Good chance that it is telling you

that the CPU is getting too hot. Why did you replace it? Good chance that yhe installation of the new one was imperfect. How much thermal paste did you put on? Any?? Too much??? The HSF to CPU clamps on properly.

Removing the side fan could have been a poor move.

Nope, new heatsink and fan are working perfect

Old heat sink and fan cause the cpu to heat up to dangerous levels. new heat sink & fan are keeping it nice and cool.

Also, due to the fact that you

modified the airflow p[aths, the whistling is simply airflow through a small slot and the fan speed doesn't get up to full speed until after the system has had time to get hot enough to require the fan to run at full rpm.

It's not a whistling its a high pitched frequency

almost to high to hear.

could it be the bearings on the fan(s)?
