Hey there Mr. Jones. Was listening to one of my favorite

May 15, 2006 4:19PM PDT

people on Jazz FM www.jazz.fm Jeff Healy, a blind blues and rock guitarist who plays the guitar on his lap, and very good he is too. Besides playing he is an avid collector of early jazz 78's and an exceptionally knowledgeable speaker thereon, hence the program "My Kind of Jazz" on Monday nights from 9PM to 11PM repeated Sunday moring between 7 and 9 AM.

He's currently doing an extensive retrospective of Teddy Wilson, and in the first ever Billie Holiday recording there was a great trumpet break. I went riffling through my mental rolodex and said to my wife "I have no idea who that is. I want to say Rex Steward, but that's wrong." Well, you probably know who it was, a glorious break by Jonah Jones, who was with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra at that point. He, Jeff Healy, then played 4 more Teddy Wilson recordings 3 with Billie as vocalist. Really enjoyable.

This may be coals to Newcastle but I just thought I'd mention it for your enjoyment.

... of the movie Road House, the Jeff Healy Band is best recognized as the band in the bar. Good musician!

Doesn't Healy own a bar in Toronto?

Yes, Healy's is a good watering hole with good bands.

But Jeff's current thing is a traditional 20's and 30's vintage jazz band. Jeff plays trumpet, and they're terrifically entertaining. He is jaw-droppingly well informed on the jazz of the period, and his radio program is really entertaining. There's usually a unifying theme, but lots of oddballs and obscurities make their appearance there too.

You're extremely well informed as usual, Evie. Thanks for all the info I left out. If you ever hear of Jeff Healy's Jazz Wizards coming to a town near you, go. You'll enjoy yourself immensely.
