Hey man! What happened to "mac applications"?

Sep 21, 2007 6:46AM PDT

Are macs so advanced that they no longer use applications?

Wasn't it "Mac Applications and Utilities?"
Sep 21, 2007 7:16AM PDT

Maybe the Cnet editors got tired of Mac snobs writing them with "Utilities? These are Macs; we don't need no steenkin' utilities!"

Guess you missed the announcement
Sep 21, 2007 9:35AM PDT

In the great Corporate scheme of things it was decided to rename a number of forums so that they came in line with Download.com, another CNET enterprise. That coupled with the idea that DL.com would be point users to these forums.

These are the ones that changed or were added:

New software forums:

Audio & video software
CNET Download.com site
Digital photography & design software
Webware

Renamed forums:
Communication & Messaging ---> E-mail, chat, and VoIP
Mac apps & utilities ---> Mac software
Microsoft Office ---> Office & productivity software
PC apps & utilities ---> PC utilities
Virus & Security Alerts ---> Spyware, viruses, & security

I do have to chuckle, a little though. Note that the Mac world has "no steenkin' utilities" while the PC world has no applicable apps!
Guess you actually need all those Utilities on a PC

Well, if CNet Forums are reorganizing forums to create...
Sep 21, 2007 10:37PM PDT

... a more synergistic relationship with Download.com ... then are they willing to put a "Mac Software" link at the top of the page (or at least have the page open with the "windows Software" menu default set to closed rather than open)? As their front page is set up right now, a guy has to scroll down to even see any mention that Download.com has mac software.

How about some parity here, Download.com? Apple users are people too !

I think we should have a sit in or something. Wink

OK, now CNet's really messing with me !
Sep 24, 2007 3:54AM PDT

First they changed the name of one of the mac forums... and now, they changed the order of how they appear in the side navigation bar !

Will this madness ever stop?

I've owned my imac since Jan. 2007.....safari has never worked...EVER. yes, I am a newbie to Macs...and am self taught on PC's (read newbie) I love my Mac.....I now own 4 manuels...'the missing manual'...'killer tips"...'iworks'06'.....and 'apple works6'....they all indicate that it could be a "Battery problem'.....how can that be, since out of the box it has never worked?????? Thank you for all suggestions and replys....maspmichele

Are you referring to "Apple Care".....
Nov 5, 2007 8:35PM PST

.... re: the "$169 package"?

If so, Apple Care is consistently recommended in these Mac forums. I does cover 3 years.

Also, you had 3 months of free support from Apple when you purchased your machine. As Safari has never worked for you, it's highly likely that your problem would have been solved from the get-go.

I bought mine (which looks like yours) less than 6 months ago. My first PC was W95. I was also "self taught", with a lot of help from phone techs, "Dummie" books, and the Help forums in this community. With the iMac, the hardest lesson has been to not try to do things the same way as with my Windows PCs. IMO, my iMac is more sensible.

You might check with your Apple Store to see if you could still buy Apple Care. (I don't know the rule on that.) Otherwise, you could take your machine there for "service".

Or if you have installed anther browser which does work well for you, enjoy!

Nov 5, 2007 9:23PM PST

I have google as my homepage...but there are lots of instances when safari quits...and yes I make the REPORT....however when I try to go to a page using the safari address bar.......nothing doing.....also I am now sharing a wireless network or router..and it takes forever to load pages.....many times I resort to the return button...I think something is very corrupted....but hardware tested out fine and I have reloaded safari from disk many times...If I go to disk utilities....everything verifies. any other suggestions?? thank you for your time and trouble, maspmichele

Sorry I can't answer those questions.
Nov 5, 2007 11:02PM PST

I don't use a router or wireless.

I do think that the "reports" are just to let Apple know of problems in general, but not for individual users.

When I would check my PCs, I always got something like "Your computer is configured properly", when stuff was amiss. Sure, I've had Safari quit "unexpectedly" but when I resume work, it hums right along.

From what I've read in these forums, re-installing several times may not be the answer for problems. Again, a Mac is different from a PC.

Maybe it could have something to do with ow you set the firewall, or with any security programs you might have installed.

Sorry I can't be of help. Good luck!

More details please
Nov 6, 2007 1:33AM PST

Is this at home or work?

What ISP are you using?

Is this your wifi, or someone else's you are piggy backing off of? If it is someone else's, do they know you are using it?

What browser are you currently using if Safari has never worked?

It sounds like you are using Safari but unhappy with its' stability. Have you tried Firefox and experienced the same problems?

safari problems continued
Jan 23, 2008 7:50AM PST

I AM SORRY> I got so disgusted with the whole problem that I just shut everything down. Then relatives arrived unexpected and unannounced from Europe, that took up 3 weeks. Then It was down to heavy reading and research and"'reaching out and touching somebody"...lots of somebodies.!!
I stand corrected. It seems that it is sort of a safari problem, since it would not load pages and told me that I wasn't connected to the internet when my Mac told me I clearly was...EVERYTIME it diagnosed me....HOWEVER, the culprit seems to be networks, routers and internets(?) going down.
No I was not piggybacking. We have a Linksys N Gigabit Router that sometimes they say they don't support Mac's(etc.etc.etc.)But I still have major problems on somedays like today with pages taking 2 or 3 minutes to load. It is very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU for all prompt replies and help. I am sorry that I just left you hanging. That is and was very rude of me. masp

I'm no technophile, but you will get that Safari working &
Feb 4, 2008 2:34AM PST

you will enjoy it. It is a faster performer. A pleasure to use. You have a technical glitch somewhere that a guru might regard a an easy error. But most of us are far from being gurus. If living close to an Apple store paying for an appointment may be money very well spent. Their training is pretty much one on one for truly professinal results. Yes, there is no guarantee that each & every one of their "geniuses" does come across as a genius.

Sorry I'm not the one to be able to help you, but you will get straightened around. Then you can appreciate iti.

Let's back up a little
Jan 23, 2008 9:36AM PST

Connect the Mac directly to the Router using a length of Cat5 Ethernet cable.

Now go on the internet. Do you get the same problem when you are connected in this way?

One of the things that you could try with the wireless side, is to disable the "N" function of the router and only use the "B" and "G" protocols.
Not all "N" wireless devices were created equal and do not always play nicely with each other.

The first step is to establish a decent connection to the internet using a wired connection.

Let us know what happens

battery?
Jan 23, 2008 10:48AM PST

your Safari browser not working because of a weak battery?? i'm not too familiar with Macs but i can not see a weak battery affecting your browser like that. there are many other free browsers available for Mac such as FireFox, OmniWeb, NetScape, SeaMonkey, etc... if those don't work either you may have an issue with your ethernet port, call Apple for support...
