Hey every one i am really pissed at my pc right now.I am sharing my internet with my brother whose pc is in another room. We'r both connected by a router but he controls the stuph i.e configuring, allowing access etc.Well it all righ after my pc became part of his pc n i think this is a lan now.I got windows Xp n same as him.BUt when i try to download sumthign from a p2p programme it tells me that teh speed will be slow as i am behind a router as that the default port # fo that programme cannot be accessed becus of the router.BUt if i download from a website it goes on a good speed. Now my q's are that how can i find out which ports on MY pc are open so i could set that port # as default to teh p2p programme as he wouldnt let me touch his pc or the router and wouldnt help me either. So i mean is there a programme which can tell me which port behind the router on my pc are open. Also that sumtimes my internet speed gets slow is it becus of teh LAN i.e the router? All help appreciated...

Which P2P program?

The most likely issue with the router is that it may not allow incoming traffic to be on a different port than the outgoing traffic unless the router is configured for port forwarding (outgoing traffic opens another port for incoming traffic). Since you're locked out of the router configuration, you're stuck with the system you have. The usual performance problem with a shared connection is when you both have heavy traffic at the same time - the bandwidth is only so big.

Before you go a step further try scanning your PC with Ad-Aware, SpyBot Search & Destroy & Stinger as well as do an online virus scan.

Let us know what these programs dtect on your PC.
Here are the links:

FYI, I spent the better part of these two weeks fixing the damage done by KaZaA on many of my clients' computers!

Just today one was so badly infected that I had to perform a full recovery!

An expensive lesson to these P2P users!
I can't complain since I get paid solving their problems.

As Keith said you can open ALL the ports on your PC but if you are

behind a router, outside internet traffic can't see your PC. Unless you get your bro to forward traffic through the router to a port on your pc it will not work. This is called port forwarding. If you want to learn about this go to
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
or
http://www.auditmypc.com/
there they will scan you IP address, Notice how I say address because they won't be scanning your pc because the router is there physically in between them and you and when they scan they will only see the ports your router allows. I don't know if I'm being clear enough write back if you don't understand.
