Hey Bill, heard on tv just now the rain is changing to snow for Winston Salem

Feb 11, 2004 8:16PM PST

Hope you don't get too much snow or ice.

There was concern that we in NE NC could get up to 4 inches here, but now looks like if we get any will change back to rain before nightfall, so hopefully we won't have problems. As get closer to Virginia more likely to be bad. Or more generally they're saying north and west. I think we're in the disputed area again, where they're not sure if the line will move over us or not. Last time they weren't sure the line would be, it ended up way south of us and we got snow, then sleet instead of the warming and rain we were promised.

Hate a nasty day off, but honestly if it's going to be icy, rather for it to be on one of my days off than trying to get back and forth to work. And of course at the mill sometimes have to work outside. It's really fun trying to climb over a 100 steps on an outdoor metal stairway when it's snowy and handrail is iced coated.

Hope ya'll get by without too much bad weather.

Be careful.

Ice is for softdrinks and whiskey, not roads and trees.

DRAT, should have gotten some 'brown water' yesterday in case did get homebound on day off. Wink

Oh well.

Snowday, Sickday Remedy

Smooth Brandy for those sick days

Had the flu for past week, sipping along on this has helped, looks like it will be a full bottle flu this year. Add some Nyquil Cough dose just before bedtime and it helps make it through a sick night too.

rain is changing to snow for Winston Salem

I'm about 80 miles or so northwest of Winston-Salem across the Va border and it's been snowing steadily for hours here already. Started in the middle of the night, woke up to a couple of inches already on the ground, and it doesn't look like it's likely to let up any too soon...it's now nearly 8:30 AM EST.

Wouldn't mind the snow so much if there wasn't already about two inches of snow under it that had turned to ice covering my whole driveway out to the road. Trying to turn around here yesterday was scary to say the least when you consider that I have a pond right next to the turn around area here, and ditches near lower end of the driveway that end up in a 20 foot hole that hasn't been filled in completely yet because culverts have to be put in to keep the water flowing from my creeks on either side of the drive to the property across the road.

Just be careful up there

Yeap, they're saying even here in the east will be snow near Virginia border, so I assume probably the entire state of Virginia up to or very near the coast will be snow.

Probably even more in your area, since here they keep repeating will be heavier to both the west and north.

Ya'll be careful, ya hear?

It was one bizarre 'storm'
Feb 12, 2004 9:43AM PST

We got a bit of snow starting about dawn. Just as the snow began to coat the ground it turned to rain and all the snow washed away.

The local schools were open just long enough for the kids to get there, then for some reason they decided to close, just about the time the rain started. The roads never were bad. Some bureaucrat just made a stupid decision. Oh well.

The weather never did get bad, and we never did get enough snow to play in.

Hi Bill:

Glad it was'nt too bad down there. It appears, the members on this post are from NC & VA.

Back in the early 50s, I was stationed down there in a hold over outfit at a stink hole called Ft. Eustis. One day it snowed about 2-3 inches. Unbelieveable, cars all over the place. We had a kid from LA who never saw snow before. He drove the weapons carrier that transported us back & forth to the engine house.
Awful, he put us in the ditch twice before we got there and found out later he rolled it over, going back.

When it gets down to 32 degrees, man, that place is cold. And the bugs in the summer whew. A few years later I was down there visiting an old buddy of mine who had just made Sgt. Major and found him up at Batt. Hqts. It was summer time and I thought by the time I did find him, I would be nothing but bones.

My heart out goes to you people down there, I'll stay up North here freezing.

George

I only saw rain, maybe a few tiny flakes mixed in the drizzle once. Temps around 40 all day.

I heard there was some buses somewhere, maybe Hertford, that slid in the ditch, so that may have influenced others. But they just closed early as I understand.

I'm just as glad there was none, I'm too old for snow, esp since as our work doesn't shut down for weather, peroid. But when really bad, there is no action against any that don't feel safe in going to work. They run what can with what there.

I don't like summer heat, and cold in the past hasn't bothered me much. But the snow and ice last couple of years getting on my nerves. Much more often even if not so heavy than I remember growing up in eastern NC.

Snow is pretty as long as you can sit at home and look out the window (and the power stays on). Otherwise, it's pretty in a movie or tv show.Wink
