Here's some information on influenza from an outbreak

Apr 6, 2020 4:15PM PDT

about 10 years ago, in two NYT articles. This author also wrote the go-to book on the "Spanish Flu" of 1918; it's cited at the bottom of the page.
Quite a bit on viruses, which is the point of commonality with COVID-19.
Note especially the three waves of a century ago. That's just one reason why Cuomo and others are wary of easing social restrictions too soon. St Louis and Philadelphia had contrasting and illuminating stories.
Useful also on seasonal flu, currently the whipping boy for some who decry the coronavirus shutdowns.
Barry's book, The Great Influenza: the story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History is highly recommended. Hey, you're gonna be at home anyway.
BTW our self-isolation ended this weekend. Maybe we'll drop by to give y'all big hugs.

Have you read Barry's book?

Just wondering since you 'highly recommend' it....

Also, a link to the article you seem to be highly praising....

This from the 'some who decry the shutdowns'...…….Forget the hugs....does this mean you're back to knocking on doors of those who HAVEN'T ended their self-isolation?

I've read Barry and the Bible.

I can tell by your comments that you've read neither.
You can find out what we do and don't do on our website. Then your comments about us will be well-informed, not the opposite.
I'm guessing you'll make the comments anyway.
You're safe from hugs from us.
Not sure what you mean by your 'decry the shutdown' comment. Barry discusses the seasonal flu vs. the 2009 swine flu dispassionately. Shutdowns work. St Louis did in 1918 and suffered little. Philly barged on with public gatherings, especially the patriotic type, and suffered for it. I reported that in other posts.
Reading Barry won't cure COVID, but will increase one's knowledge. Always a good thing. Could say the same about the Bible. In fact, I have. Happy
Sorry about the link. Still looking.

I just noticed that COVID and its variants are

now in my phone's spellchecker.
I bought it before the epidemic. Now, that's service. AI?

back to knocking on doors of those who HAVEN'T ended their self-isolation?

You got a problem with knocking on doors of those who HAVEN'T ended their self-isolation?

I recently saw a picture of someones gkids "knocking on doors"

We stopped all forms of public witnessing early on,

on orders from HQ. Now it's just remote by phone and PC, and to any who go to JW.org. In the case of my wife and myself, we could visit any of our students who are also clean, but we probably won't until it's over. Memorial tonight on Zoom; Sunday meeting ditto; personal study.
Rhode Island was noted for sending its cops door to door recently to look for those who had moved in from NY to evade the lockdown there. RI's choice, but risky.
Couple of Bible Belt pastors in the news for holding services and making it a religious issue (it is not); one contracted COVID and died.
In one of the top hotspots in the world, the Pope took a stroll in Rome, with bodyguards, without mask.
We're ok, especially since we 'ran away from Brooklyn because we were tired of having doors slammed in our faces.' (Single quotes, because I can't recall your exact words. Happy )
The decision to move COVID-19-positive hospital patients onto the USN hospital ship backfired within about 10 minutes, didn't it? Half of its value to NYC is now deflated.

We're ok.

We're using Zoom on Sunday too.
Apr 14, 2020 6:42PM PDT

First time was a pain. Firefox refused to run it. Chromium eventually did run it, but only after I installed a Linux version of the program, which worked the best. Still, my sound was like cats fighting for awhile, but finally got that corrected. Seemed Zoom had some problem with my HID sound to the TV/monitor. Hopefully next sunday will work OK from start.

I'm just a user, but I notice it seems sensitive

Did you see any of them

actually interact with anybody? Nope...two were wearing masks, but all of them rang the doorbell and ran away after leaving their presents for their neighbors.

RE:presents for their neighbors.
Apr 7, 2020 2:00PM PDT

"presents" that SHOULD be decontaminated?

I'm NOT saying it wasn't a nice gesture...just that everybody doesn't/may not feel the same as the donors.

Up here, in MY neighbourhood...The Popo(police)  were on a neighbours property for over 1/2 hour giving a family of 5 (2 adults & 3 kids) a stern lecture on "staying home".

If you lived in a neighborhood, like a decent

Several "pastors" who refused "social distancing" died
Apr 14, 2020 6:47PM PDT

One was black, I think the other was white. Look for news. Too much hand shaking? "Tempt not the Lord thy God"? Did they forget the OT teaching about how to deal with infected people and keeping them outside the "congregation of the people"? That was certainly "social distancing". Maybe instead of saying
God talked to them, and then smacking them on the head putting on a big show, they should devote more time for study & teaching instead. When talking with God, He didn't warn them they would be infected? Maybe they were talking to the wrong Spirit?

Lev 13:45,46.

The two verses mandate masks and distancing. 3000 years ago.
That was for leprosy, more virulent than today's. Worked.
Stiffer penalty, too.

Not a pretty sight either. Yet cf. Mt 8:3.

Found the link, on Barry's own website.

There! The king will be able to link that without his spectacles!
First was in WaPost, second in NYT.
BTW the Times also has no paywall for novel coronavirus stories. But after it's over, you'll get a Spam a day for maybe a year!

Just now, again with 'light at the end of the tunnel'.
Apr 8, 2020 5:06PM PDT

Wish he would stop saying that. People my age- high risk- remember when that meant more years of 'Nam.

- Collapse -
And you make that sentence sound
Apr 9, 2020 2:32AM PDT

like you actually were high risk there, too......

- Collapse -
I just realized this needs a response.
Apr 14, 2020 2:36AM PDT

Not for you, but because I don't want credit for something I didn't do.
I was in the Navy during Nam, but never in country. My "high risk", then, was for transfer orders that never came. That's it.

It happens our ship was berthed opposite side of the pier where new swift boats were moored prior to shipment. I thought they were neat.
