Bottom line: bad parenting. I like his honesty; hope he changes.
Just the wife and me, but I exhibit some of the same behavior.
One trick would be to turn the phone OFF, not just to silent, during one activity. Start with meals for instance.
OTOH I've just learned how to do a couple of useful, practical things with my phone and ten buck's worth of unlimited data. Saves buying wireless for the home, and lets me e.g. bring in extra bucks from eBay.
In Jehovah's new world we'll have devices - but no batteries. Happy
