Here They Come...Unreal Tournament 3 Questions....

Nov 27, 2007 12:36PM PST

I just installed and tried to play Unreal Tournament 3.

The intro went smoothly, the menus came up, and I configured everything.

Everything seemed fine until hit ?load game?

Before the game could load, my computer informed me it was going to sleep.

The screen went black, the monitor powered down, but the CPU stayed on.

I was not able to wake the computer up. It had apparently gone into a coma, so I had to force it to shut off and reboot.

The second time I attempted to load a game, the full screen retracted before my eyes, and all I got was a large black square on the screen with the rest of my desktop showing.

The third time I tried to load the game, once again, my monitor decided to take a nap, and I had a force the CPU to shut down and reboot again.

Upon rebooting, I was ?greeted? by a ?friendly? message informing me the system had just recovered from a serious error. Ah, things just got better and better.

These problems occurred with or without the cd in the drive. Though, apparently, there is nothing in the literature that says the cd is required to be in the drive during play.

Although, my computer does not have the optimal requirements for game play, it does have more than the minimum.

The minimum requirements are:
Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista
2.0 + GHZ Single Core Processor
512 Megabytes of RAM
NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600 Video Card
8 Gig. free hard drive space

The recommended requirements are:
2.4 GHZ Dual Core Processor
1 Gig. RAM
NVIDIA 7800GTX or ATI x1300 Video Card
8 Gig free hard drive space

What I?ve got:
Windows XP with SP2
3.2 GHZ dual core processor
1 GB DDR2-533 RAM / PC2 4200 (2 DIMM)
256MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX 6800 Ultra (Just updated the driver a few weeks ago)
Plenty of free space on my hard drive

Is there anyone out there in cyberland who could troubleshoot this problem for me?

I have been playing Unreal Tournament 2004 for the past year and could use a change of scenery.

Was really hoping UT3 and my computer would experience love at first sight, but it looks like they want to break up before even saying a word to each other.

Is this a match made in computer hell or can this relationship work?

Any software/computer relationship gurus out there who can help?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Burned out on UT 2004,

That 'Serious error' message. What was it?
Nov 29, 2007 12:17AM PST

Was this a Blue Screen of Death, (BSOD) message? If so, what was the STOP error code?

Sounds to me like a video card problem but without that error message no-one can say.

What does the Event Viewer say? (Start > Run > type in eventvwr then click OK, then check the events for System. Double click any entries with errors on them).

Error Message...
Dec 4, 2007 3:51AM PST

Not sure about the BSOD, I can't recall my screen going blue (if that's what it means), but I followed your instructions and ran an error check.

Here's two error messages I found for the application...

Faulting application ut3.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.3119, fault address 0x00012a5b.

Hanging application UT3.exe, version 0.0.0.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Is this information of any use?

My computer and UT3 still are not talking to each other. Maybe, I am just a bad matchmaker.

Here Are a Few Configurations Which May help...
Jan 3, 2008 2:48PM PST

Hi,

Well, as things have turned out, I returned UT3 and got the Hitman Trilogy instead (which runs beautifully on my computer).

As you pointed out, it's best to wait a while before getting UT3, so they have time to iron out the bugs.

Alhough I was never able to solve the problem with the game never saving any of my game settings, I was able to tweak things enough to get it to run without crashing. The game did get a little stuttery but was very playable.

Below are some of the configurations I used which seemed to solve the crashing problems.

If you still have the game and are up to tinkering with it a little more, hopefully, these configurations can help your game become stable enough to play.

[Engine.ISVHacks]
bInitializeShadersOnDemand=False
DisableATITextureFilterOptimizationChecks=True
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
PumpWindowMessagesWhenRenderThreadStalled=False

[Engine.GameEngine]
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62
bClearAnimSetLinkupCachesOnLoadMap=TRUE

[TextureStreaming]
PoolSize=158
HysteresisLimit=20
DropMipLevelsLimit=16
StopIncreasingLimit=12
StopStreamingLimit=8
MinFudgeFactor=0.5
FudgeFactorIncreaseRateOfChange=0.5
FudgeFactorDecreaseRateOfChange=-0.4
MinRequestedMipsToConsider=11
MinTimeToGuaranteeMinMipCount=2
MaxTimeToGuaranteeMinMipCount=12
UseTextureFileCache=FALSE

That's good to know.

Thank you.

Hopefully they will sort out the bugs in UT3 in due course.

Maybe, This Will Help...
Jan 4, 2008 3:20PM PST

Remember, I no longer have the game, but hopefully, I spent enough hours (ugh) working on UT3 to recall...

In the game folder, its the UT3 engine document you need to find. I am pretty sure it's the only UT3 document you can open which will contain all the configurations.

There will be a long list of different configurations, but you just need to find the configuration settings I posted and change those settings in the UT3 engine document, so it matches what I posted.

I would recommend typing the settings into the UT3 engine document, so the font will be the same because many times when you copy and paste text from one document into another, the fonts don't match, and that could cause a problem.

Make sure you save the new configurations and give the game a go. I sure hope this helps.

Feel free to ask any other questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.
