Here's One

Hey Guys
I hoping somebody can help me with this before I smash this thing.
Lately I've been having problems with comp.freezing up or hanging, for which I got some helpful tips from a couple of people here. The last tip which I followed was to clean the fan of dust and stuff which it needed badly.I removed the fan and what it sits on and gave it good cleaning then put it back in.Within a day of putting it back it started freezing again but now what it would do is when I'd try and restart it just the fan would start but the rest of the comp. would not start. After trying everything I could think of I just pushed down hard on the fan then tried restarting again and worked. So now when it freezes and I have to restart it just before I do I push down on the fan and it starts.I don't see how this could be from taking it out to clean and replacing it. Could it?.

Due to the previous condition of dusty fan and/or operation under less than prefect cooling conditions, your cpu is "touchy". The heat stress has made it so. I suggest, you get a tube or packet of new "heatsink compound" or a new heatsink fan setup(HSF) very capable of handling your cpu. Upon install remove the old paste found on the cpu and install new. Here's link that should explain what needs to be done:
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_alumina_instructions.htm

Once done, be sure the HSF and cpu are fully seated and 100% contact. Hopefully, this will resolve your problem, as I think you have old paste past its prime and non-100% seated HSF. New cpus used "thermal tape", so don't be surprised if that's the case, HSF paste is proper replacement.

Yea I have..

I have run scans quite a bit lately because this has been happening quite allot lately (freezing).Last week I posted about this problem and as I said earlier I got quite a bit of help. One suggestion was to download edwido (AVG)and run a scan with that which I did and ofcourse it found a few things mainly tracking cookies.I also was told try DISK CLEANUP and see if that helped and if not look into CCleaner and if the hanging kept happening to run it.I did download it but didn't use it.My anti-virus caught a virus called CCleanerUninstall.exe and deleted it.I uninstalled the program anyway. The next day the A-V found 2 more 1.W32/Backdoor.ATUJ 2.A0300847.EXE-W32/Backdoor.I've run scans a bunch of times since it found those and it came up clean. As far as what you suggested Willy,I should say that when I said the fan really needed cleaning it did but I don't think it was so bad that the comp.was over heating. Also this computer isn't used for gaming or anything like that and is only a couple of yrs old so I'm hoping I don't have to get a new (HSF)or atleast try a few more things before doing that. Thanks allot guys for taking the time to answer.

Try AVG ANTI SPYWARE and your AV program in safe mode.

Does it freeze in safe mode?

CCleanerUninstall.exe is not a virus,it is an uninstallation program for ccleaner.

Try the scans if this don't work you may have to purge system restore then run the scans in safe mode, but try scanning first without purging.

Hey Tomron
No it's never froze in safe mode.I'll run AVG anti spy ware in safe mode,my anti virus won't run in safe mode but I'll see what happens with Anti-SW.Oh and yea I know the CCleaner is not a virus haha, just when my anti-virus popped up showing it found a virus it was named CCleanerUninstall.exe for some reason.Anyway after I familiarized myself with CCleaner and what it did I decided to leave that for one of the last options.I guess as you suggested I may have to try system restore. What did you mean by "Purge"?.Thanks allot for the help.Once I get that done I post back and tell you what it found. Thanks again.

This link will explain the reason for purging(flushing)restore points. Can a virus be stored in a Restore Point?

Don't forget to update your security programs and scan in safe mode.

I don't know why your AV won't run in safe mode.

Hey Tom
Jul 4, 2007 3:45PM PDT

It seems one of the things you advised me to try got it.When I ran AVG anti-spyware in safe mode all it found was one tracking cookie which surprised me,I thought forsure it would of found more then that.
Anyway I ran my adware 2007 a couple of times and again it only found a few minor things but for some reason one of them must have done something because it hasn't froze once in two days (touch wood).I'll wait a few more days and see what happens but so far so good. Thanks allot for your help.
