I'm not all that geared up over the A-Rod acquisition. I'd have been perfectly happy with Joe Randa, and if they wanted to pursue a superstar I'd have preferred Albert Pujols.

I think Steinbrenner is right about one thing though -- the Red Sox didn't lose this one to the Yankees; they lost it to themselves. They could have had him and they made the decision to let the deal die. That's not the Yankees' fault.

I'd guess that the only reason the Red Sox started discussions for A-Rod in the first place was to prevent the Yankees from getting him, but in such a case they should either have gone through with it or never started the process. Now the Red Sox have no A-Rod, and they've got two guys (Manny and Nomar) who were given the message that they're not wanted.

Can you see Nomar playing 2B for the Yankees in '05?
