Here is the diagnosis of my 55 inch samsung 7000 buzz/hum

Sep 1, 2009 11:03PM PDT

I called Samsung to get a tech to my house for the humming/buzzing sound I am hearing on my TV. A tech called me and had me explain what I am hearing. I told him and he said it could be one of two things.

1. bad power supply (they are sending one to my house)

2. bad florecent tubes or balast (since I said humming/buzzing was coming from left and right side of the TV.

He said he can't order a new panel if #2 is the pronlem unless he comes out which he is doing when he gets the power supply.

HDTech, from what I have mentioned would you agree with his diagnosis over the phone?he will do a better test when he arrives but I just wanted to get your opinion.

Thanks,
Steven

wallstreet123456,

The techs will always have the advantage of being able to see the unit versus me estimating from afar. It's not a bad diagnosis, but I don't know how effective I'd be in attempting to confirm or deny. It sounds to me like the diagnosis is moving in the right direction.

Humming - Buzzing

I've been watching both side of these discussions and I just had a thought.

This noise could have an external cause. It could be caused by harmonics on the incoming power. Harmonics are distortions on the AC Sine wave. These distortions can cause transformer windings to ring and impress a ripple on the power supply outputs if not properly filtered.

Harmonics can be caused by several type of equipment and appliances. Computer power supplies and fluorescent lights are two. A much worse source are SCR speed controls for fan motors or light dimmers.

You might have people turn this kind of stuff off in the house to see if the noise stops. It could also be coming in from outside the house. It takes a Harmonics Power Analyzer to know for sure. This noise would be at either 60 or 120 Hz.

Adding ferrite beads to the power leads is one fix.

If this works you can send me a check.

If your suggestion is correct wouldn't the humming/buzzing come from the speakers? if So the sound is not comming from the speakers, it is comming from the TV when the speakers are either on or off.

No, not necessarily from the speakers. Transformers in the power supply could be the source.

The fluorescent lights I am talking about are not in the TV, but in the house.

wallstreet123456,

No, it would have Edge-Lit LED lighting.

Hey, it's just an idea. Samsung doesn't seem to have a clue or any suggestions other than swapping parts. Others have indicated that this doesn't work.

If it is a harmonics problem it would explain why some people have the problem and others don't.

Have others with this model had the same problem? I have not seen it posted for the LED edge lit sets
