A shop counter can test your Ethernet port pretty fast. I'll share how I do this.
I boot up Puppy or Mint Linux from USB or DVD as this sidesteps Windows software issues without touching your current files or install.
This is all over the web and free. It's always good to keep this around for test and backup.
NO LINUX SKILLS REQUIRED: Read this old advice I gave at http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

Hi, I have a Compaq laptop with Vista and was using it Sunday. I turned it off and later that night, I went to use it and it said Server not found. I have unplugged, replugged and it is still not connecting. I can use it wireless; but usually use the ethernet cable. Since one end of the cable had broken off a while again ( the little part that moves) I got a new cable, And it still does not connect. I contacted Verizon and they said to put the cable in port 1 and 2, and I did... and it lit up.. but the tech person said he would have to get back to me.
What is going on? I did not add anything.... Thank you
