Since we're on the topic of helpful stuff. Applejack is a free utility that can be run in single-user mode, and does file and disk checks/repairs, verifies preference files, and a couple more things that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Hi, figured I would share this with the Mac users on here. I just had an issue today where something got messed up with my preferences. Before I figured that out, I ran a disk utility check of my hard drive.
The problem is, you can usually only do a "Repair Disk Permissions" with disk utility on the drive you boot from and that is often the one that needs repairs. So, if you want to do an actual disk repair and you don't have the System CD to boot from, do the following. It will boot you into single user mode with a (don't be frightened...) command line. ![]()
1) Hold down Command-S while rebooting.
2) when the black screen with white text comes up type:
/sbin/fsck -fy
be sure to note the space between fsck and -fy
It will then run through a diagnostic. When it is finished, type reboot.
