HELP - xbox 360 does not seem to recognize new HD

Bought an arcade version of xbox360 a week or so ago, then bought an external HD off ebay for about $20. I clicked in the HD, but the System Settings on the 360 still show only 318MB or so. Is there anything else I need to do like format it through the menu? Thanks for help

The problem is that the 360 doesn't support external hard drives without some kind of modification, which is beyond what can be discussed here.

Short story, if you bought the drive solely for the purpose of using it on the 360, you got scammed.
