Help with video processing & choosing right receiver

Oct 31, 2008 2:56PM PDT

I need some help with video processing and choosing a receiver; Onkyo TX-SR606 or Sony STR-DG920. I have a Samsung LN52A650 television.

Reading the review here of the Onkyo receiver, it says the video processing is very poor. So my first question is if the receiver has horrible video processing but the television has good video processing, which video processing will be used, the tv or receiver? If one video processing component is better than the other, is the better one used by default some how, or the last component in the chain used for video processing? In other words, if you have multiple components that process video, what determines which piece actually processes the video? The same goes with upconverting, if more than one component upconverts video, what determines which component actually does the upconverting?

Lastly, between the two receivers listed above, which one do you guys recommend over the other? I'm using a PS3 for Blu-Ray, the Samsung tv listed above, a Velodyne powered subwoofer, and various surround sound speakers.

Thanks very much for the info.

Please note I meant "upscaling" and not "upconverting" as mentioned above.

the poor VP in the Onkyo

has to do with component inputs, converted to HDMI output. If HDMI in, and HDMI out, you have no worry. . .

well, my 805 supposedly alters black level with a 24p signal. Your PS3 can output 24p, and your TV can handle it. So, that may not please you, if the 606 had the same issue.

However, the effect is extremely subtle. I have an insane HT. Really insane. And I'm still keeping it as my processor for the time being. I didn't even learn of this till very recently, and I visit AV boards on a daily basis.

Put it this way, the upper-crust Onkyo, namely 875, 876, 905, 906, integra 9.8, 9.9, has fancy Reon HQV Vp, and unfortunately has issues with color space. Guess what, people with 20k systems are still happily using it.

Reminds of the current Pio thread regarding advanced mode.

I know nothing of the Sony.

Don't worry about VP. Its not even worth thinking about until you are talking about significantly more money. your tv, all tv's, will naturally convert any signal that it can accept, and scale to its own native resolution.

I will assume the Onkyo has a better amp section. The older 606 put out 85w with 5 channels according to Sound/Vision (but some of their test have been scrutinized). They rated the Yam 663 at only 45w at 5 ch, for instance.

The only thing I dont like about the 6xx series is lack of preouts. This most likely has no bearing at all to you.
