Help with Video edit and burrning DVDs

Dec 8, 2005 5:53AM PST

Ok? I?m about to rip my head off because I have a couple of programs to capture, edit and burn DVDs so that u can watch them from normal DVD players. However when I try to burn they freeze up. I use I copy DVD?s 2 ultra ed. My computer is windows xp media and well equipped to edit videos.

I am looking at getting Sony Vegas movie studio + DVD. Is there a big difference between normal and platinum edition. I?m also looking at Roxio easy media creator 8, but I have read a lot of reviews saying that there is major bugs in it. Any help with these 2 or some suggestions on some capture, edit and burn software that is STABLE, unlike I copy DVD?s 2 (crap). Trying to keep the price reasonable Sony Vegas Studio + DVD platinum is $129 and I am willing to spend that but it is kind of expensive for me (I?m in college).

Oh... my camcorder is a panasonic pv-gs31 its a miniDV.
Camcorder is great by the way, i love it.

PLEASE HELP
Thanks ahead of time,
clayton

OK....here is what i did

I got sony vegas movie studio + dvd (version 6). you can pick up 2 different versions of this, platinum or normal, from $89 for normal to $130 for platinum at best buy, cirucuit city, and media play or any computer stores. the only differnce is platinum has more effects and stuff like that but they both can make dvds from you miniDV camcorder. acctually the program is made for only miviDVs and dvd camcorders.

first of all you need to get a fire wire. that is pretty much the only other thing besides USB you can use for any kind of cameras. besides i dont think it will recognize a USB conneciton. it connects into you computer, here is what it looks like http://www.midsouthcable.com/YC_FIRE_WIRE_IEEE1394W225.jpg

that is the one you probly need for your camcorder (4-6 pin). this is what it plugs into.
http://www.macdtv.com/GuideToDTV/1_iMovie/graphics/iMovie/000Introduction/FireWire_6pin.gif

k...afte that you open the progarm and go to file and capture. then you start capturing your video. once done it puts the clips into a pool of media that you drag and drop into the timeline. Easy!! then you can edit or if you just want to make a dvd click on make a movie button at top. then it will ask you to render it. make it mpeg2. that is dvd quality and you should be able to get about 2 hours on one dvd by messing with the quality a little. I got this program for christmas and that afternoon i made a 20 min dvd of that morrnig with menus and all. and i didnt eaven read the directions.

oh...it uses a dvd archetict program that is very stabe and somewhat easy to use.

this program itself is very stabel and i would recomend it very much. it wont hang up on you at all.

p.s. excuse my spelling im in a hurry
******if you have anymore questions about it let me know. i am getting better and better at editing the more i use it****

thanx,
clay

do you check the forums all the time i am going to put a link here that goes to a site that tells you how to do everything with this program. but i got to go back to college because the site is saved in on my other computer. it helps a lot with rendering questions and edditing. its a forum so if you want you could also ask direct questions.

What i know...
Jan 16, 2006 7:21AM PST

I am pretty sure you need I fire wire for transferring video. See this link

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7813-0.html?forumID=59&threadID=102908&messageID=1179655

If you do not have a fire wire port you can buy them for cheap that fit into you PCI slot.
As for software that will render/convert and burn to DVD, I am not sure. I know that if you buy Sony Vegas movie studio + DVD it does work. it comes with DVD archetect studio 3.0 *CHECK IT OUT*
http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/catOid/-13066/Ntk/All/Ntt/vegas/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do

Also after you have made some DVD?s you will probably want to start editing and you can also add menus, it is really fun and everyone is Awwed with what you can do. There is also some roxio programs and nero. Remember you have to have something to capture the video from the camera. So if you get just a burning program like roxio easy CD and DVD burning
(http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Roxio-Easy-CD-DVD-Burning-/sem/rpsm/oid/113071/catOid/-13000/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) you will want to look at WINDV (google it) it?s free.
Also you can read reviews on all the video software and you will see that roxio, pennacle and other software are really buggy and hang up all the time while you using them losing everything. But do some research on what you are going to buy before you buy it.

Anything eles let me know!!!

I need help to burn DVD too
Dec 8, 2005 12:35PM PST

Hi, I have a Sony DVD DCR92 camcorder. I have the same problem. Conventional DVD burner that came with my Dell does not read the Sony files pub, vob etc. My systems used to freeze. I spoke with a Sony representative online (chat), he told me to buy the Vegas Movie studio, the simple version. Its running is highly complicated in itself, on top of that, it does not read all these Sony file types either. Does read some. This also hangs up and I have to restart.

I can easily say that I share your feelings.

It also depends on your own system, I have a Pentium M, 512 MB Ram, Windows XP cimputer. If someone has clues or experience, please help me too

Dig Video Capture, Create Chapt Pnts, Render, Convert, Burn
Jan 16, 2006 1:16PM PST

I'm in the same mess. I've recently learned a great deal about the process, but still am having problems. Basically, you must capture the video in AVI format to your harddrive using firewire, create chapter points for the DVD menue, do any editing (which I don't), render/convert/compress to mpeg-2 format, and burn the DVD. You can either do these things separately with different software for each, or use software that does it all for you, like Sonic MyDVD 4.5's Direct to DVD option.

With the Sonic MyDVD 4.5's Direct-to-DVD option, you create the chapter points for the DVD menue, during the capture process, by hitting the spacebar. The results are nice & it takes about two hours. However about 1/4 of the time I run into an error/glitch, which causes the whole process to be a waste of time. I think the problem occurs with miniDV tapes that I'd removed from the camcorder & then put back in for one reason or another, because it's often that point in the tape that has the problem. Another problem I've had with the direct-to-DVD process is that it doesn't quite fit an hour of MiniDV onto one DVD (you lose about 3 minutes of footage), so I have to remember not to use the full hour of miniDV tape. Also, I'm not sure if it compresses it to mpeg-2 or some other format, and I don't think it stores the file anywhere on your harddrive, so you can't find it to solve the errors. You have no control over this.

So I've recently tried to convert the video by using Ulead Video Studeo 5.0 DV to capture it to my harddrive in AVI format, and then used Sonic MyDVD to render/convert/compress it to mpeg-2 and burn the DVD. This takes about four hours. This way I can store a copy of the uncompressed AVI version on my harddrive & it creates a separate mpeg-2 file before burning. However I can't figure out how to create chapter points for my DVD menue & I sometimes still run into rendering/burning errors that I haven't been able to solve.

If anyone has the time to provide me some detailed help, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm leaning toward the direct-to-DVD method because it's quicker & creates nice motion-chapter-point menues on my finished DVD. However I want it to also provide me with an AVI version for permanent storage on my hardrive, & I want to be sure the final DVD version is in mpeg-2 format. Does Sonic MyDVD direct-to-DVD store an uncompressed AVI version somewhere on my hardrive? Also, how can I solve the error/glitch problem that I described above? Or can you suggest a different/better direct-to-DVD software for me. I'm not interested in editing, other than creating the DVD menue chapter points. I'm using a Sony DCR-HC85 MiniDV camcorder, Dell Dimension 8300 computer, 2.66GHz processor, 512MB DDRSD RAM, 4x DVD+RW/+RW/CD-RW drive, Windows XP, firewire card, etc.

The link for Sony vegas movie studio...nicknock!!
Jan 16, 2006 10:40PM PST

This is a link i said i would put up in an earlier post. It will help you with any problem for this program.
http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/index.php?sid=1616f40bf392b7ce7a9864f1294d7d23

I have never used ulead or sonic, i have read lots of reviews about a bunch of editing and burning software and it is hard to find a good one that will not hang up or cause errors all the time. Ive used drag and drop cd+dvd burn suit and it hangs up every time it reneders/converts. windows movie mixer just is so basic that it wont even copy to a dvd and has very few effects and options. Roxio and pinnacle hang up a lot so you lose a lot of your work. the only one i have had succesfully work for me all the time is sony vegas movie studio. It sounds like i am trying to market this product but i am not. I just know how frustrating it can be because i had the same problems. however my first time using Sony vegas i made a dvd with menus and all.

getting chapter marks in video
Mar 29, 2009 7:04AM PDT

I would not use any of the programs you mentioned. Go for the best.
Adobie Premiere. I use CS2 pro.
You can automatically put a chapter mark wherever there is a break
in the video. ( transition) You can then choose an opening page
where you type the name of your movie. Click Burn, and your on
your way.
