Question

Help with specs for a video/design desktop

Jul 23, 2013 1:11PM PDT

I have worked with computers my whole life and currently have a job as a Programmer/Analyst - and I'm a little ashamed to admit this...

I still don't understand the specs on certain PC components and how they effect specific processes. Luckily my generation of programmers hasn't had to focus nearly as much on the hardware side - but it has also left me clueless.

I am planning to build a desktop specifically for video/(2d)graphic work. Some programming as well, but nothing intensive enough to even worry about that aspect.

The three components I would like to focus on are: Processor, Memory, & Video Card. I have a basic understanding of how they work, but I'm pretty clueless about the specs themselves. The only PC builds I have done have been HTPCs (this being their only function) which needed a decent video card, but not much else.

I'm probably going to make a fool of myself, but here is my basic understanding:

Processor - Handles all processing. When I render a video, or add a ton of dynamic effects to an image/illustration, the speed at which that happens is based on my processor.

Memory - Facilitates quick access storage. Although I'm not sure when I heard this, I've always believed this had a major impact on speed as well.

Video/Graphics Card - Allows video to display on a monitor. These are very important for gaming PCs. That's all I know on that one.

Hopefully I'm not too far off, but as you can see, I'm a little lacking in knowledge on the subject. I think this project is a great opportunity to learn. I always learn best by just digging in.

So, how do these components (or any integral components I missed) fit into my workflow? We can focus on capturing/editing/rendering video & effects for simplicity. My graphics work is exclusively 2D, so I think it can take a back seat.

I sincerely appreciate any & all input

I am not looking for specific product suggestions, unless it helps in explaining. I am just looking for the role that the hardware plays in the scheme of things.
