-Help with router-

Jul 31, 2005 10:41AM PDT

I just purchased a Compaq notebook (V2312US),and i got a free router which is the "D-Link,DI-524" and i came home and hooked it up. I have DSL so i have to do the "DSL connection always" so i tried to connect but it would not work all it said was "connecting..." and then it asked if i wanted to redial. So i read the manual for the router and it said to go to START>RIGHT CLICK ON "MY NETWORK PLACES">THEN SELECT "PROPERTIES"> RIGHT CLICK ON THE NETWORK CONNECTION associated with the ethernet adapter and SELECT PROPERTIES....I did this on my parents desktop and I could not find the "NETWORK CONNECTION" on the properties of network connections. My DSL works fine when i hook it up the regular way (this is how i am writing this*).

Thanks,
DJ DUDE

P.S
When the desktop turns off will i lose the connection on the router and the internet will stop on my notebook? or/and do i have to leave my computer on to still get internet on my notebook.?

The DL 524 has some very new firmware.

I can safely bet that the router's firmware is not the latest.

WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN...AND IS IT FIXABLE?????

I would not put this on firmware just yet.

I see an internet connection from a DSL modem (possibly a modem/router) to a D-Link router, which apparently is not set up to act a gateway. Your ISP should be able to guide you through this, but I would look at:

1) Is the router set up with the User name and password?
2) Is PPPoE being used as the Internet Connection type?
3) As mentioned earlier, does the modem have built in routing capabilities and if so, is the modem set to bridge mode to allow the D-Link to act as the DHCP server?

Further more, I would not act so rudely to someone who offers help as you did to the previous poster.

I know the feeling.

I wasted about an hour trying this or that. Then I checked firmware versions.

Its a shame so much hardware is delivered ready for us to repair.

I own a 524.

It didn't work out of the box until I updated the firmware. Even then I was planning to replace it. Recently another update and now it's fine.

It's easy to find what version you have and to update it. Just follow the directions at dlink.com

-> Just wondering, why not look at the maker's web site for help?

That only works...

If you have the connection to the non-WAN ports to a PC and the router and you may have to reboot. There's little in your post, but some erect firewalls and stop themselves dead in their own tracks.

Also, there's a RESET on the router that I always hit since you never know if someone else has set it up oddly.

Bob

Tip: With a paperclip, hold down on the "RESET" button for more than 10 seconds. ..

Firewall
Aug 1, 2005 8:40AM PDT

I'm surprised the firewall wasn't mentioned before. The free version of ZoneAlarm, which so many people use, is notorious for causing networking issue.

Please shut down your firewall and try to connect though your router then and post your results. If you can connect without your firewall running, visit the FW maker for a conflict resolution. They all know about these problems. Unfortunately, the fix is frequently paying for a Pro version of the software.

What do you mean by not working?
Jul 31, 2005 3:09PM PDT

When you enter http://192.168.0.1/ you should be able to open your router setup and configuration manager. You will first be asked for a user name and password (check your manual to get the defaults). Do you mean by ''not working'' that you don't get to the password screen? If this is the case, then you probably don't have your computer hooked to the router properly, as Bob was suggesting, or you may indeed have to reset it. Please tell us how you are connecting it. Also, have you tried connecting the desktop to the router to see if that works? I think you can solve your problem if you can get into the configuration manager and change some settings for the DSL connection as Michael suggested (Login, password, PPPoE) and yes, possibly needing to bridge the modem if it actually is a modem/router.

Configuration manager
Aug 1, 2005 2:05PM PDT

The reason to enter http://192.168.0.1 is to get into the router configuration manager. If you get an error trying to load it, then it is likely you don't have the router connected to your computer properly. As I asked earlier, please tell us exactly how you are physically connected to the router. You should have an ethernet cable connected to your network interface on your notebook running to one of the four ethernet ports on the router, and the DSL modem connected to the WAN port. Or are you trying to connect wirelessly? Do tell.

P.S. I really wouldn't worry about a firmware upgrade at this point, because you need to be able to get into the router configuration to do the upgrade!

Why, unless it is defective?
Jul 31, 2005 8:30PM PDT

There is no indication that anything is wrong with the router. Yes, perhaps the firmware should be updated -- but almost anything you buy off the shelf is apt to have older firmware or drivers, and should be checked for possible updates immediately. DJ's problem seems to be configuring the router, and that would need to be done with any new router.

I have been using this D-Link router for some time, and have never had a problem, once I configured it for my ISP and systems.

LOL I just have to share this funny story with you! I, too, called Dlink because I was having problems setting up my wireless router this past 2 days. After 1/2 hr with 1 techie, he transferred me to a more advanced techie for help. He couldn't get it working either and told me take my router back to circuit city to be replaced. I phoned there to let them know I was bringing it back and found out that we had just lost our internet due to an accident miles down the road!!!! No wonder the techies couldn't help!!! The internet went down EXACTLY at the same time I called Dlink! When asked if I had internet, I said yes becuz up until the phone call, I did!!! Those poor techies were pulling their hair out, I'm sure, and here it wasn't any fault of mine, theirs, or the router's!!! LOL Just had to share that! Coincidences can be so freaky!!! No wonder Mom always said ''timing is very important''! LOL
