Help with problem

Jun 18, 2007 4:07AM PDT

I was erasing some things that I thought were unnecessary on my computer today, things that my son had downloaded,Yahoo messenger and some other things. I am not sure if I erased something that I shouldn't have or what, but right after that I started getting a message that says "please wait while Windows configures HP Digital media archive. The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'EZARC.msi' in the box below. When I click ok, it says the path 'c\hp\tmp\scr/EZARC.msi cannot be found. Verify you have access and try again or try to find the installation package 'EZARC.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product. The message pops up constantly even after I hit cancel and in the menu at the bottom of my screen it says HP DigitalMedia Archive. I am not good with computers and have no idea what this means. I have an HP Media Center, Windows XP.

If anyone can help me, I would try appreciate it!

Thanks - Dawn Wilson

Help with computer problem
Jun 18, 2007 10:03AM PDT

Hi Charlie: Thanks so much for your help. I went to the link that you gave me and it talks about inserting the disk for the printer or other hardware that you last installed. Someone else actually set up my computer for me, but I found a disk called HP Deskjet D4100 series and assumed that was it. I thought it would just reinstall the printer, but now under Control Panel I have a lot of new things installed that I never noticed before. They must all be from that. Not sure what I did there. Anyway, the next step to try talks about removing and reinstalling the program. When I go to add/remove programs and HP Digital Media Archive to uninstall it, it doesn't give me the option of removing it so I'm not sure what to do now. I hate to do the restore thing since I just started a new job and am so afraid of messing up everything that I have set up for that.

Any suggestions on how to remove the Digital Media Archive and reinstall it?

Thanks so much,

Dawn

You mentioned this is a work computer. If it is the Bosses computer, contact the company's IT person. That's what he or she is there for. If it is your own computer and is new, you [may] have a service agreement. Call their service/support team. Even if you don't have a service agreement, it can never hurt to ask.

As far as any documents, files, folders, photos, programs or program setup (.exe) files that you do not want to risk loosing. You can back them up by coping (not moving) them to a cd. Since cd's are not [always] a particularly stable media for backup, it's a good idea to always maintain a copy of the backup on a separate cd. I backup my work related files to cd at the end of the day and update the extra copy at the end of the week. A better backup media would probably be an external hard drive that can be turned off or disconnected except for when transferring data.

The HP Deskjet D4100 series is the printer. If you ran this disc you [may] find at Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes that you have two installations of the printer If so, the second one may be indicated by "(2)." You should be able to delete it, or even just leave it be. As for the new items that have shown up in Add/Remove programs, most program and driver cd's come with optional trial ware programs as a sort of advertisement. They should be safe to delete. But first create a System Restore point just in case you should find that they are something you would like to have.

I assume that HP Digital Media Archive is also listed in Start > All Programs. If so, it may also have a shortcut named "Uninstall." If so, clicking on it should walk you through the uninstallation process. Before uninstalling it, make sure you have the cd or setup program to reinstall it. BTW, I assume that you actlually [clicked] on Digital Media Archive when you were in Add/Remove programs. Another option is to go to Start > Search > in the top dialogue box type Digital Media Archive and click Search. If it finds a reference to Digital Media Archive then go to
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html and download and install Move On Boot. Then right click on any file relating to HP Digital Media Archive. Left click on Properties. Left click on GiPo@Utilities. In the dialogue box left click on GiPo@MoveOnBoog > Execute. Select the radio button beside Delete File. then left click on Next > Start > Finish. Restart the computer.

Always, prior to making major changes to the system such as installing or uninstalling programs or profiles, create System Restore points. Because, when we least expect it, stuff happens. And it's nice to be able to restore the system to the way it was before.
